Job Description
Join the University of Chicago Medicine as an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) for our Inpatient Hematology/Oncology Night APP Team.
The Advanced Practice Provider will be responsible for comprehensive direct patient care management and will manage a caseload of patients by exercising autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments. The APP will provide healthcare and patient services that may include educational, research, and clinical nursing specialist support, as well as complete administrative activities under the direction and supervision of the Director/leadership. The APP has acquired the knowledge, skills, and judgment necessary to assist the physician through organized instruction and supervised practice.
This is a night shift position from 7pm to 7:30am. The night APPs will cover three inpatient APP services: Inpatient Leukemia, Inpatient Cellular Therapy, and Inpatient Chemotherapy. These services are all APP-staffed services which each have the support of a Hematology/Oncology Fellow and Hematology/Oncology Attending. After an orientation period on both days and nights, the APP will work independently and autonomously on the Inpatient Hematology/Oncology Night APP Team. At night, the APP will be responsible for answering pages on established inpatients and admitting patients appropriate for the service. The APP will be trained to manage oncologic emergencies such as neutropenic fever, tumor lysis syndrome, and cytokine release syndrome. The APP will always have the fellow and attending as resources, although they will not be in house at night. Optimal staffing at night will be 2 APPs covering all three services.
Advantages of this position include a high level of autonomy in a specialized setting within an academic medical center, a higher hourly rate for night shift hours worked, and self-scheduling in tandem with the other night APPs.
