Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP)-PRN Hours
The NNP provides inpatient neonatal care in collaboration with the neonatologist.
- Perform history and physical examinations, formulate differential diagnosis, order and interpret preventative and diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, delegate selected nursing tasks, initiate referrals to specialist, initiate and complete discharges, and document independently on neonates.
- Medical management at all sites includes caring for acute and chronically ill infants. Lurie Children’s manages complex surgical cases, ECMO, and other specialty services as needed.
- Delivery room management of high risk newborns

Location: Lurie Children’s Hospital has one of the largest NNP groups in the Chicagoland area. Lurie NNP’s practice at both the main Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago as well as outreach locations in the suburbs of Chicago. The outreach locations include Central Dupage Hospital (Winfield), Delnor Hospital (Geneva), Silver Cross Hospital (New Lenox) and Prentice Women’s Hospital (Chicago). Rotation between a min of two hospitals will take place once orientation to both units are completed.
Gennral Summary:
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works within the multidisciplinary clinical team to provide individualized patient care through history and physical assessment, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, medication ordering, prescribing and management, formulating diagnoses and patient/family education. They promote evidenced based practice by conducting or participating in research and academic activities. They provide support to colleagues and staff to promote the professional development of the advanced practice profession at Lurie Children’s and in the community-at-large. The role is unique to each division and in accordance with individual credentialing and privileging through the Medical Staff Office.
Advance Practice Provider Transition into Practice Fellowship
Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago offers an Advance Practice Provider (APP) transition into practice fellowship for all new graduate APPs. All new hire APPs, even those with experience, are invited to participate in the fellowship. The APP transition into practice fellowship is designed to provide a supportive structure and strategies to facilitate the transition from the academic to clinical setting for newly hired APPs and institution to institution transition for those with experience.
The first year of employment will consist of quarterly didactic sessions with integrated facilitator led peer supported transition sessions, structured mentorship, and precepted practice-based learning with standardized competencies. APPs in the fellowship are hired as paid employees of the institution.
The fellowship is designed to aid the development of well prepared, clinically competent, APPs as well as to provide support, build confidence and skills to develop a collaborative practice.

Area Specific Job Accountabilities:
- Provides expert clinical care, education, consultation, advocacy research, leadership and mentorship.
- Manages primary, acute and chronic health problems through comprehensive history and physical examination assessment and diagnosis. This may include palliative and end of life care.
- Orders, performs and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests and procedures.
- Orders and prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions and performs other therapeutic or corrective measures to treat illness and improve health status.
- Promotes the advancement of the profession at Lurie Children’s and the community-at-large. This may include publication, participation in professional organizations and providing educational support to the nursing staff.
- Collaborates and coordinates care with medical team to deliver evidenced-based care and establish best practices in clinical care.
- Participates in research design, implementation, and interpretation.
- Meets the Medical Staffs Allied Health Practitioners core measures of performance related to patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal communication skills, professionalism, and system-based practice.
- Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers, and others.
- Role may include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Master’s degree or higher from an accredited school appropriate for certification as a Nurse
- Practitioner Physician Assistant. (CNS certification is not acceptable if hired after January 1, 2010)
- Two (2) years of relevant clinical experience is preferred.
- Licensure in the State of Illinois as an APRN/PA is required.
- Clinical privileges through credentialing by the Medical Staff Office achieved within 90 days of hire. Practices under the direction of advanced practice provider or physician providers until fully credentialed and privileged
- Basic Life Support certification required. Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification and/or other specialty certification is required in some areas within 6 months of employment.
- Any other certification required for specialty area.
- Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills, basic computer skills, and strong verbal and written
- communication skills.
