Oncology RN Jobs Overview

Registered nurses in oncology play an essential role in helping patients deal with cancer. When you work in oncology RN jobs, you’re part of a multidisciplinary team that provides treatment, coordinates care, and provides much needed support to these patients, as well as their families.

If you’re ready to find a new career opportunity, IntelyCare can show you the latest full-time, part-time, contract, and per diem openings for RNs right now. You can also search for work in related roles such as infusion RN jobs and med-surg RN jobs.

Oncology RN Education and Skills

To become an oncology RN, you must hold either an associate degree in nursing (ADN) or a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN), and your RN license needs to be in good standing. Some oncology registered nurse jobs will prefer candidates to have a BSN and at least one year of clinical experience.

Obtaining specialty certification can give you an advantage over the competition. The Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) has a handful of options for RNs, and you may also want to get IV certification or chemo certification.

Oncology RN Resume and Cover Letter

One way to grab an employer’s attention is with an oncology RN resume that speaks to their specific needs. Pay attention to the requirements listed in registered nurse oncology jobs and have your resume reflect what you see in the job ad.

For example, if the ideal candidate is an RN who can “translate complex medical terminology for patients, families, and caregivers,” use that phrase in your resume. In your cover letter, explain the ways in which you educate patients and their support circles about treatment plans, medications and possible side-effects, and follow-up measures. This is a great way to show the value you’d bring to the role.

Interviewing for RN Oncology Jobs

Employers are interested to learn how you can make their oncology unit a better place for everyone — patients and staff — who walks through the doors. In addition to reviewing nurse interview questions in advance, read the facility’s mission statement and mirror those values in your answers.

Salary for Oncology RN Positions

The average annual oncology RN salary is around $85,500. Your salary can be impacted by your years of experience, level of education, certifications, facility, and location. Some of the highest-paying states for RNs include:
