Position Summary
This is a supervisory position for coverage of the Nursing Department, all other patient care areas, and the hospital in general. Responsibilities require knowledge of hospital and nursing policies and procedures, allowing independent judgment in their interpretation. The Nursing House Supervisor assists the Director of Nursing in supervising and coordinating the clinical activities of nursing. He/She assumes responsibility and accountability for the management of the Nursing Department and hospital in general in the absence of the Director of Nursing and/or Nurse Manager. The Nursing House Supervisor is also responsible for the supervision and evaluation of nursing personnel in his/her designated shift. He/She serves as a coordinator and as a liaison between the nursing units and other departments. He/She assumes other responsibilities and duties related to the provision and coordination of patient care during non-routine hours and is responsible for patient flow throughout the organization. The Nurse House Supervisor also provides staff education as assigned. The Nursing Supervisor is the administrative representative of the hospital in the absence of other administrative personnel. Holiday coverage will be conducted on a rotational basis.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Standards:
- Assists in maintaining the Hospital’s and Nursing Department’s philosophy through directing and coordinating effective and safe nursing care.
- Assists in the continuous analysis and evaluation of the Nursing care of patients by the use of staffing utilization studies, performance improvement activities, and performance evaluations.
- Assists in ensuring that hospital and Nursing Department standards, policies, procedures, and protocols are followed.
- Maintains safe and satisfactory working conditions for the staff through continuous monitoring in accordance with hospital and department policies and procedures.
- Maintains a high standard of patient care and personnel performance by being aware of the indications pointed out by the performance improvement program and giving special attention to improvement actions.
- Establishes priorities for patient cares activities and provides for continuity and coordination of patientcare.
- Acts as administrative representative of the hospital in the absence of other administrative personnel.
- Serves as a resource to staff for solving clinical problems.
- Determines the issues to be referred to the Administrator on call.
- Provides relief for meals and breaks as necessary.
- Professional Accountability:
- Maintains proficiency in clinical and administrative knowledge and skills.
- Immediately investigates patient complaints and patient incidents.
- Responds immediately to all crises or calls for assistance as needed.
- Acts as incident commander during emergency disaster events.
- Utilizes critical thinking/nursing process in resolving patient care problems.
- Maintains effective communication with staff and administration.
- Complies with CHA Compliance Handbook including Code of Ethics and all statutes, regulations and guidelines applicable to federal and state programs. Responsibilities include following the guidelines and reporting suspected violations of any statutes, regulations, agreements, or guidelines applicable to all healthcare programs.

- Contributes to review of quality measures and ensures implementation of practices.
- Staffing:
- Manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs.
- Supervises nurses and staff and takes administrative responsibilities and ensures adequate staffing for the oncoming shift.
- Develops and implements staffing plan for shift based on patient acuity, patient census, and available staff.
- Reviews the need for and recommends changes in standards of staffing according to results of staffing utilization reports.
- Develops, maintains, and submits required staffing records and associated reports.
- Reviews staffing patterns, census, and acuity of nursing units to see that staffing is consistent with patient needs and budgetary control; assists in adjusting staff to meet needs and makes rounds to observe daily staff balance.
- Manages, directs, and coordinates the functions of subordinates. Guides staff members individually on professional and personal matters as appropriate.
- Maintains a high morale among subordinates by evaluating performance fairly, treating staff in a dignified manner, taking appropriate action with the staff, and keeping the staff informed of matters. Conducts and attends meetings as needed.
- Supervises staff by the use of recognized effective control mechanisms, including direct observation of staff. Evaluate, implement immediate correction, counseling, and appropriate disciplinary actions, when necessary.
- Assists in the orientation of nursing personnel, monitors their nursing skills, observes and guides staff to become more proficient in appropriate procedures.
- Recommends plans for personnel development and counsels with Director of Nursing on the training needs of the staff by being aware of performance improvement indicators and incident report investigations that point out inadequacies of staff performance.
- Make recommendations for the selection of staff members for cross training and promotions.
- Collaboration:
- Promotes good public relations with patients, visitors, and hospital co-workers.
- Promotes efficient interdepartmental relationships. Cooperates with other departments and provides for coordinated patient care services.
- Collects reports from staff on matters related to patient care and/or nursing issues and forwards information to the receiving shift supervisor along with beeper and keys.
- Assists nurse manager and/or charge nurse in evaluating problems and situations related to patients, families, physicians, or other hospital departments and helps initiate and evaluate actions taken.
- Coordinates emergency surgery by initiating calls to operating team and provides necessary supplies from Central Supply (when not staffed).
- Obtains patient’s previous medical records, medications and/or supplies as needed from other departments (when not staffed) to maintain safe, efficient, and therapeutic care to patients on a continuing basis.
- Implements standardized patient procedure for procurement of death, to include notification of organ and tissue donor organization, physician, and medical examiner as needed.
- Performance Improvement:
- Assists in Nursing Performance Improvement Program.
- Recommends the purchase of materials or equipment for the Nursing Department.
- Responds immediately to all crises or calls for assistance as needed, and ensures that appropriate documentation, including unusual occurrence reports are completed, per policy.
- Suggests and/or participates in projects, studies, or committee work.
- Follows Hospital and Department policies and procedures at all times, including but not limited to: Administrative Manual, Environment of Care, Human Resources, Infection Control, Corporate Compliance, Code of Ethics, etc.
- Attend, actively participate and complete in-services, training classes, mandatory classes, seminars/workshops, staff meetings, exercises and drills; reads all department communication and assigned materials.
- Customer Service – Provides excellent customer service and shows compassion to all patients, visitors and co-workers. Seeks feedback to ensure all needs are met. Anticipates and recognizes the concerns of others, even if those concerns are not openly expressed.
- Communication – Keeps manager and team informed of progress, problems, development and plans. Gets along and interacts positively with co-workers and others.
- Follows Hospital and Department policies and procedures at all times, including but not limited to: Administrative Manual, Environment of Care, Human Resources, Infection Control, Corporate Compliance, Code of Ethics, etc.
- Accepts and performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
- Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.
- Two years acute care clinical experience within past four years required.
- BLS, ACLS, and PALS certificate.
Preferred
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Managerial or supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of community resources and cultural needs.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, staff is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and/or listen. He/she uses his/her hands to do computer work, write reports, do equipment set-up/cleaning/storage, clerical support, etc. He/she will be using the phone frequently. Good vision is needed to be able to read schedules, enter accurate data, etc. He/she must have good general health and demonstrate emotional stability so as to carry out the above-enumerated duties.
- Able to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Stand, walk, and move 50% of the day.
- Use proper body mechanics when handling equipment.

Base Pay Scale
Starting at $67.99 – $101.89 per hour. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
