Summary: The Senior Director of Nursing assists the CNO in executive-level management of resources, strategic planning and development of policies and procedures which ensure congruence with the mission and vision of ANMC. The Senior Director of Nursing will have operational and functional responsibility for a group of patient care areas and/or special projects or initiatives. The Senior Director of Nursing will mentor and assist Nursing Leadership to advance their leadership skills, this role will also assist and help develop communication, knowledge, leadership, professionalism, and business skills to support the overall oversight of nursing service.
Responsibilities
- Assists the CNO in developing and managing the nursing services budget. Monitors staffing levels, patient acuity, and budgetary constraints to ensure cost-effective care delivery. Manage daily staffing costs and work with nursing leadership to maintain budgetary compliance while upholding high standards of care.
- Drives the alignment of long-term strategic goals with current operational objectives, ensuring department’s direction aligns with ANTHC Corporate plans. Collaborate with senior leaders across departments to foster an integrated approach to patient care, resource allocation, and innovation. Formulates and leads strategies that anticipate organizational needs, potential risks, and growth opportunities, ensuring the division remains ahead of industry trends and patient care demands.
- Establishes high-level division objectives, prioritizes major initiatives, and assesses potential external and internal risks. Fosters proactive problem-solving at the division level to mitigate threats and capitalize on opportunities.
- Ensure the efficient operation of nursing services by setting clear performance expectations, aligning resources effectively, and implementing best practices for staff development, budget management, and resource optimization.
- Creates an environment of continuous improvement. Encourages strong nursing morale by promoting personal investment and excellence. Builds effective departments committed to organizational goals, fosters collaboration, and encourages and empowers others to excel. Accurately assesses the strengths and developmental needs of departments and provides timely, constructive feedback that contributes to and promotes development.
- Establishes systems that measure and drive customer satisfaction at all levels—internal, external, and patient care—ensuring operational outcomes support the broader mission of the organization.

- Oversees talent management and development initiatives that align with organizational needs, accurately assessing strengths and areas for growth within nursing departments. Provide leadership and mentorship to nursing staff, fostering a culture of autonomy, evidence-based practice, and clinical research. Encourage independent problem-solving and personal accountability within teams. Lead talent management and development initiatives, offering high-level coaching and feedback to cultivate the next generation of nursing leaders. Ensure staff competency and readiness to meet current and future organizational needs.
- Provides leadership, direction and guidance to assigned staff. Develops goals and priorities, and assigns tasks and projects. Develops staff skills and training plans. Counsels, trains and coaches management staff. Implements corrective actions and conducts performance evaluations.
- Efficiently manages staffing and scheduling, maintaining adequate staffing for patient acuity, budget, and census. Monitors staffing costs per unit of services on a daily basis and works with clinical coordinators and charge nurses to manage within the budget. Develops and implements an annual operating and capital budget and maintains responsibility for the P&L.
- Maintains a safe work environment by ensuring staff adheres to all regulatory requirements and hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Ensures a culture of safety and compliance across all nursing departments, meeting and exceeding regulatory standards. Oversees the implementation of safety protocols, ensuring staff competency and adherence to scope of practice and regulatory requirements. Ensures staff is competent and performing within the appropriate scope of practice. Ensures equipment is clean and properly maintained and operated in a safe manner.

M INIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION
A Master’s Degree in Nursing
Minimum Experience Qualification
Ten (10) years increasing responsibility in clinical nursing, five (5) of which must include staff supervision.
MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION
- Current registered nurse license in the State of Alaska
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) card required.

- May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule.
- May be called out to work off-shift in emergency situations.
- According to the needs of the organization, some incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain specific technical certifications and programming language skills.
