Family Planning & Abortion Care Health Center Associate II (HCA II), Medical Assistant (MA) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – Brooklyn Park, MN
Starting salary for candidate who meets minimum requirements (Experience will be compensated): HCA II: $20+/hr., MA: $20+/hr., LPN: $24+/hr.
$3/hour evening, $1.50/hour weekend differential provided when shift requirements are met
Typical Schedule: 8 hours/week

A Day in the Life
Under immediate supervision of the Health Center Manager, the Health Center Associate II, Medical Assistant or LPN performs routine clinic duties associated with a reproductive health program within the scope of their HCA II/MA/LPN training. Provides excellent customer service. HCA II/MA/LPN's are advocates in implementing our mission “To affirm the right to reproductive health and freedom for all by providing excellent care, trusted education, and fierce advocacy.” They may perform other related duties to support health center operations as assigned.
Schedule: Fridays, 9:15am-5:30pm, (8 hours per week).
Responsibilities
This position will impact us with the following contributions:
- Interview and screen patients, conduct patient history review, document in electronic medical record, and prepare patients for examinations/procedures. Monitor patient vital signs.
- Perform routine laboratory tests including venipuncture. Communicate lab test results to clinician.
- Set up exam rooms and prepare patients for their clinical visits.
- Provide factual patient education. Provide additional education after clinician or RN assessment. Including explanations of all FDA approved birth control methods. Provide unbiased specific instruction on the client’s selected birth control method.
- Provide contraceptive supplies, medications including injectables, perform venipuncture, and manage patients with medical emergencies per PPNCS protocols under direct supervision of licensed nurse practitioner, physician’s assistant, physician, or registered nurse.
- Assure inventory control of clinic and contraceptive supplies including ordering, stocking, inventory reconciliation and tracking.
- Communicate PPNCS protocols, policy and procedures to clinicians and staff as appropriate. Assure clinic manuals are up to date (e.g., clinic, lab, safety).
- Provide factual, unbiased information to patients seeking abortion.
- Describe the difference between medication and surgical abortion.
- Inform patients in a non-directive manner about all options available to them in the event of an unintended pregnancy and make a referral for service based on the patients’ needs.
- All health center staff are expected to participate in the onboarding of new employees and supporting the cross-training of established employees.
- Follow all laws regarding mandatory reporting.
- Participate in team approach to patient care working cooperatively with others to achieve productivity standards and exceptional customer service.
- Maintain a working knowledge of Planned Parenthood policies and procedures and apply these to patient and clinic services.
Provide Coverage at the Front Desk as Needed:
- Welcome all patients and visitors. Register patients for health center services. Answer phones, direct calls, and reach out to patients as needed. Perform computer data entry, including patient demographics, insurance information, and appointment scheduling.
- Maintain patient medical record and obtain patient consent for forms as necessary. Appropriately handle requests for patient medical records.
- Collect, assess, and verify patient financial information and determine and confirm insurance coverage. Comply with all funding source requirements. Assess funding sources, aid patients in applying for and obtaining funding. Provide patients with resources for insurance navigation, financial counseling, and community sliding scale health centers.
- Accurately inform patients of potential costs for services. Assess and collect patient fees. Reconcile, prepare, and make bank deposits. Comply with all aspects of the cash handling policies.
- Prepare charge tickets for clinical staff coding. Charge post for clinical services and review charges for accuracy. Perform and reconcile charge reports.
- Ensure all patients are provided with information regarding donations and are asked for a donation at the time of checkout. Provide a summary of services for the transaction.
- Perform in-health center refill and resupply requests within scope of practice, including curbside prescription delivery.
Additional Essential Functions for Working at Surgical Sites:
- As appropriate assist the physician with surgical procedures, monitor patient stability and perform macroscopic exam of tissue post-procedure.
- Supervise and observe patients post procedure recovery
- Comply with all laws governing services
- Comply with all policies, procedures, rules and applicable laws and regulations governing abortion and other care services
The Ideal Candidate Brings:
- Health Center Associate II:
- At least 6 months experience as an HCA I or VCA at PPNCS
- BLS (Basic Life Support) Certificate for healthcare providers, or ability to obtain before start date
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Basic computer and office skills

Medical Assistant:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Current BLS certification
- Completion of a Medical Assisting diploma program, Associate degree in Medical Assisting, has equivalent military experience or past EMT/Paramedic licensure.
LPN:
- Current active, unencumbered LPN license in state you are applying for the role
- Current BLS certification
The ideal candidate is passionate about patient care, has previous Reproductive healthcare experience and experience with NextGen or other Electronic Health Record Systems.

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS:
The position you are applying for is in a health center with direct patient care, therefore, if you were to be offered and accept employment, we would require the following documents from you prior to your first day of employment. Please do not bring this documentation to your interview – you will have forms to complete that require the documentation should you be offered the position.
- Hepatitis B vaccination records and titers
- Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccination records or proof of immunization
- Chicken Pox vaccination records or proof of immunization
- Tetanus shot documentation
- Tuberculosis PPD Skin Test that is no older than 12 months
- CPR Certification
