Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center, Indiana's first community mental health center, provides comprehensive care for emotional and behavioral problems, including severe mental illness and substance abuse. The Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center offers both inpatient and outpatient services, including several outreach centers as well as clinic- and community-based services.
About Stabilization, Treatment and Rehabilitation Services Program (STARS):
Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center STARS program provides specialized services to individuals with a mental illness and concurrent intellectual/developmental disability.
Staffed with psychiatric clinicians, nurses, care coordinators and psychiatrists, clients are offered a variety of services including individual therapy, group therapy, case management, Behavioral Primary Health Care Coordination, Adult Mental Health Habilitation and psychiatric follow-along support. Acute services are also available through Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center’s continuum of treatment. Additionally, clients have access to Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center's Glad Writings Card Shop and Supported Employment Program.
The philosophy of treatment is based on the recovery- and strengths-based treatment models in which individuals are evaluated in the context of their strengths and supports, recognizing that having a purpose in life (e.g., a job) and a support system (e.g., family and friends) are variables that predict stabilization. Identifying mental illness symptomatology in individuals with intellectual disability is a particular diagnostic challenge. Appropriate diagnosis and treatment depend on intensive collaboration with a residential team/family and tracking symptoms over a period of time until a clear diagnosis is made. The family/residential service/behavior specialist is an integral member of the team.
Where You Fit In:
The Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center Staff Nurse is a key member of the STARS Program, providing health education and counseling to control and prevent diseases. This role responds to patients' health needs by promptly identifying and assessing healthcare requirements. As a Registered Nurse (RN) you'll play a crucial role in a specialized healthcare team, focusing on compassionate, holistic, and evidence-based care for individuals with behavioral health challenges. The position involves patient assessment, crisis intervention, community base visits, and collaboration within a multidisciplinary team.
What to Expect:
Staff members approach treatment with a heightened sensitivity, creating an environment conducive to the well-being of patients. The multidisciplinary team includes psychiatrists, nurses, pharmacists, therapist, care coordinators, support specialist, and other specialty clinics who collectively provide care for a variety of individuals throughout Marion County. Regular team meetings are conducted to deliberate on individual patient care, emphasizing independence and harm-reduction care whenever feasible.
Am I Qualified?
- Minimum of twelve months of clinical nursing experience as a Registered Nurse
- Minimum of twelve months of clinical experience in Behavioral Health
- Graduated from an accredited nursing program
- Current Indiana License as a Registered Nurse.
- Must possess a valid Indiana Driver's License and meet Eskenazi Health driving requirements.
- Current BLS certification.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Advocacy: Actively supports and promotes the well-being of the vulnerable population in Marion County
- Care: Performs nursing services in outpatient clinics and community visits, responding to the health needs of patients.
- Teach: Provides health education and patient counseling to control and prevent disease promoting optimum health.

- Develops and implements nursing care intervention for holistic treatment of the patient.
- Medication administration and phlebotomy
- Implement treatment plans per provider orders.
- Refers patients to appropriate agencies/organizations for continuity of care.
- Works collaboratively with the treatment team to counsel patients and their families.
- Attends staff meeting regularly to share information and participate in discussions.
- Complete and submits internal nursing audits regularly.
- Conducts patient interviews and maintains health records for direct client services.
- Ensure timely completion of all documentation EMR, as per company policy.
- Meets productivity goals.
- Adapts activities/behaviors to ensure adequate care based on the age of patients served.
- Demonstrates an understanding of the Recovery Model, indicating a patient-centered approach to care, emphasizing recovery and empowerment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of best standards for age-appropriate care.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
- Training in the use and side effects of psychotropic medications.
- Nursing case management
Skills:
- Advanced critical thinking regarding assessment, crisis intervention, within a strength-based framework.
- Strong interpersonal skills/ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both verbal and written communication.
- Practice in mental health and addictions treatment.
- Experience in providing risk assessments.
Abilities:
- Ability to gather, interpret, and analyze client data.
- Ability to provide case presentations to AIC nursing and paramedic staff.
- Ability to receive feedback.
