Job Description Registered Nurse-Emergency Department (RN) Registered Nurse Job Summary: Evaluate, plan, implement and document nursing care provided to all patients served. Function within the Kansas Nurse Practice Act to deliver comprehensive holistic nursing care to patients served. Works as a team member in a multi-disciplinary approach to manage the workload and patient volumes. Registered Nurse Principal Accountabilities: Assess patient understanding of plan of care to better facilitate education opportunities and materials during hospital care working toward discharge. Follows established protocols for narcotic and other medication or treatment administration ensuring the five (5) rights of medication administration are met. Communicates pertinent information related to patient’s condition to inform physicians, additional staff nurses, and/or ancillary departments of patient needs and/or plan of care/treatment. Documents concerns, findings, and actions, implementing appropriate plan of care related to patient’s diagnosis for continuity of care. Assess patient’s condition continuously monitoring changes in status physical findings, vital signs, and coping skills ensuring appropriate care is given related to patient needs. Department Specific Accountabilities: Maintain a current knowledge of care and procedures for the emergency and trauma patient including an understanding of facility policies, and state and federal laws to provide optimal care for the patient. Practices time management to optimize completion of multiple tasks accurately and consistently within a fast-paced, critical-care environment. Demonstrates the ability to provide a medical screening evaluation and triage appropriately. Utilizes active listening skills to communicate with physicians, multi-disciplinary team members, patients and significant others involved in patient’s care. Effective communication at all times optimizes delivery of holistic approach to care. Demonstrates the ability to recognize cardiac rhythms and provide advance cardiac care to patients. Demonstrates knowledge of medications relevant to the emergency/trauma and critical care environment including the required monitoring to assure safe nursing practice. Prepared to respond to emergency situations within the department and responds to in-house or campus emergencies such as code blue situations and to act as the team leader following standard ACLS, PALS, and TNCC protocols. They work closely with Medical Providers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide high-quality patient care and maintain efficient clinic operations.
