Pediatric Nurse Jobs Overview

Pediatric nurses care for well, sick, and injured children from babyhood through adolescence. These registered nurses also play a critical role in their young patients’ formative years by helping families maintain a healthy home environment. If you’re looking for pediatric nurse jobs, you’re in the right place.

The job outlook for registered nurses is promising — employment over the next decade is expected to grow by 6%. We can help you find great pediatric jobs for nurses on IntelyCare today. You can also search by license type:

Education and Certifications for Pediatric Nurse Jobs

Compassion and solid communication are of utmost importance when treating pediatric patients and their families. You might choose to become a pediatric registered nurse, a pediatric nurse practitioner, or another level of nurse. You must complete an accredited nursing program for your role and pass any required examinations in order to hold a nursing license/certification that is in good standing.

Employers may require pediatric nurse job candidates to have a year or two of clinical experience under their belts. You may also need certain courses or certifications such as:

  • Basic life support (BLS) certification
  • Advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS) certification
  • IV certification
  • Pediatric emergency assessments, recognition, and stabilization (PEARS) certification
  • Pediatric advanced life support (PALS) certification
  • S.T.A.B.L.E. certification
  • Neonatal resuscitation program (NRP) certification
  • Emergency nursing pediatric course (ENPC) certification

Qualified registered nurses may apply to take the certified pediatric nurse exam once you have completed

  • 1,800 pediatric clinical hours in the past two years or
  • 3,000 pediatric clinical hours in the past five years

Again, it’s not necessary to obtain a pediatric nursing certification board (PNCB) certification in order to work in pediatric nursing jobs, but employers may prefer to hire someone with this distinction.

Pediatric Nurse Resume and Cover Letter

A solid resume and cover letter can help you gain an advantage when you apply to pediatric nursing jobs. Make sure the keywords in your resume and cover letter align with those you read in the job ad. For example, if you see “step-down experience” listed toward the top of an employer’s requirements, put that very phrase in your pediatric nurse resume if it applies to your background. In your pediatric nurse cover letter, you can expand on your experience caring for patients transitioning out of ICU and the relevant soft skills you used in your practice.

Interviewing for Pediatric Nurse Positions

You spend considerable time and energy on your resume and cover letter, so be sure to follow all the way through and prepare for your job interview. Take a look at typical pediatric nurse interview questions and practice your answers in front of a mirror.

If you really want to stand out from the competition, do some homework on your potential employer. What are their values and culture? Do they have a mission statement? What’s been mentioned in recent press releases? Take what you learn and incorporate it into your answers, as well as your questions for the hiring manager. This can help leave a good impression by demonstrating your genuine interest in their particular facility.

Ways of Working

One of the great benefits of working in nursing is that the field has options for how and where you’d like to work. You can find full-time, part-time, contract, temporary, or per diem pediatric nurse job openings. Additionally, you can choose to work in a physician’s office, hospital, community clinic, or other setting.

Salary for a Pediatric Nurse Job

The average salary for pediatric nurse jobs is $80,200 per year, although this can vary depending on your education level, experience, advanced credentials, location, and the facility itself. To get a better idea of your potential pediatric nurse salary, explore the jobs on this page to see what employers are currently offering in your area.
