Oncology NP Education and Certifications
To become an oncology NP, you must hold either a master’s degree in nursing (MSN) or a doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) and have a nursing license in good standing. You will then need to pass the nurse practitioner certifying exam.
While additional certification is not a requirement for all nurse practitioner oncology jobs, the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) offers an advanced oncology certified nurse practitioner (AOCNP) credential, which can both deepen your expertise and help you move up in your career. You may also want to get IV certification or chemo certification.
Resume and Cover Letter for NP Oncology Jobs
Your nurse practitioner resume for oncology roles should highlight the value you could bring to a team. One way to do this is by tailoring each resume to the specific needs of an employer. So, if a hospital posts an ad that says it is looking for an oncology NP who can “manage the psychological and social concerns of a patient and their caretakers in response to a cancer diagnosis,” and you have prior relevant experience, include that phrase on your resume.
In your cover letter, be sure to give examples of how you like to show support for patients who undergo cancer treatments. Align your skills to the needs of the job so that employers can easily recognize that you would be a great fit.
Interviewing for an Oncology Nurse Practitioner Job
Before you sit for a job interview, take some time to prepare by going over common nurse interview questions and practicing your answers aloud. You want to sound self-assured and demonstrate a healthy sense of empathy. Crafting your answers in advance can help you strike a good balance.
NP Oncology Salary
The average annual nurse practitioner salary is $128,490. The salary for oncology NP jobs can be impacted by your years of experience, level of education, certifications, employer, and location. Some of the best-paying states for NPs include:
