LPN Urgent Care Jobs Overview

Working in urgent care can be a rewarding experience for any nursing professional. With the opportunity to deliver frontline care to a walk-in patient base with wide ranging needs, it’s similar to working in an ER — but usually without the added life-or-death pressure.

Urgent care centers nearly doubled nationwide from 2014 to 2023, offering an expanding range of opportunities for practical nurses to find LPN urgent care jobs closer to home. And finding these open positions for LPNs (also called licensed vocational nurses, or LVNs, in California and Texas) has never been easier. Our job board has the latest full-time, part-time, contract, temporary, and per diem positions for LPNs looking for something new. You can also explore related roles such as LPN ER jobs and LPN outpatient jobs. Check them out today.

LPN Urgent Care Education, Skills, and Certifications

Like LPN hospital jobs, LPN clinic jobs, or other LPN roles, urgent care LPN jobs first require you to obtain qualifications to work as a licensed practical nurse. That means, at a minimum, completing an LPN program from a state-approved institution, passing the NCLEX-PN, and getting a license that allows you to work within the LPN scope of practice in your state.

Additional certifications will also serve you well when searching for urgent care LPN jobs. Having Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications are always a plus (and sometimes required). Having additional training or expertise in EHR systems will also serve you well. While some facilities will hire urgent care LPNs with no experience, six months to a year of nursing experience under your belt will put you in a better position to land your desired job.

Being in a fluctuating and often fast-paced healthcare setting demands a certain set of soft skills as well. Find ways to highlight some or all of these key skills when applying for LPN urgent care jobs:

  • Interpersonal, social, and communication skills
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Fluency in medical terminology

Resume and Cover Letter for Urgent Care LPN Jobs

Want to know how to have the most impact when applying for LPN jobs? Urgent care facilities and other employers will put very specific language in their job postings that you can also include in your LPN resume. For example, if a job posting states that candidates will need to “perform basic health assessments of patients with urgent, emergent, and non-urgent presentation,” then similar wording should be included in your resume, if that’s been part of your nursing experience.

Using the right words in your resume is key to getting it to surface up to hiring managers, but it’s important to go beyond keywords and phrases. That’s where your LPN cover letter comes in. This is your opportunity to add more context and color to your resume. If your resume notes your experience performing basic health assessments on patients, use your cover letter to talk about how frequently you’ve done this and any best practices you picked up along the way.

Interviewing for Urgent Care LPN Jobs

Interviewing for a new job is rarely a stress-free experience. After all, not only is the focus on you and your experience, but it’s also loaded with opportunities for first impressions — good or bad.

If you’re trying to land your next job, preparation before your interview is the key to success. Looking for ways to show how you can add value to an organization? Be sure to review common urgent care nursing interview questions as well as key details about your potential healthcare employer — like its mission, patient base and demographics, organizational structure, and recent news. This can help you to better tailor your answers and give you ideas for your own questions to ask.

Salary for Urgent Care LPN Jobs

The nationwide average LPN salary is $60,790 per year, which comes out to an hourly rate of $29.23. For outpatient centers, the average yearly salary for LPNs is $66,740. This will vary by facility, and will also be dependent on your experience level and location, among other factors. Here’s a list of the states with the highest salaries for LPNs:
