LPN Labor and Delivery Jobs Overview

Ready to take the next step in your career as a labor and delivery LPN? With excellent critical thinking skills and the ability to make quick decisions, a labor and delivery LPN attends to the needs of multiple patients at once — a mother readying for childbirth and the baby (or babies) ready to enter the world. It can be a challenging job, but also the most rewarding. Introducing babies to their mothers for the first time is a special benefit that LPN labor and delivery jobs offer.

Looking to take your healthcare career in a new direction? Whether you’re interested in entry-level LPN labor and delivery jobs or positions that require more experience, IntelyCare’s nursing job board hosts a wide range of open LPN positions to browse. With full-time, part-time, temporary, per diem, and contract nursing roles, you can find your next job today.

LPN Labor and Delivery Education, Certifications, and Skills

There are a few steps to take before you can become an L&D nurse. Starting with the completion of an LPN program from an accredited institution, you’ll also need to pass the NCLEX-PN and obtain licensure in your state of practice. Some employers may also require a year or more of experience before working in this often complex practice area.

The more experience you have within your LPN scope of practice, the more your application can stand out from the rest. Having a background in the following nursing practice areas can help to catch the eye of hiring managers:

Additional certifications will also make your resume more appealing. Beyond Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), consider adding additional training such as S.T.A.B.L.E. or the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).

For a better idea of the qualifications and skills that employers are looking for in L&D for all types of nurse candidates, take a look at our sample labor and delivery nurse job description.

Resume and Cover Letter for Labor and Delivery LPN Jobs

As you sharpen up your resume to apply for LPN labor and delivery jobs, pay close attention to the wording used in job postings. You want the content in your LPN resume to line up with key phrases in an organization’s posting. For example, if a job posting says that candidates should have experience “maintaining and preparing cesarean delivery and other delivery rooms in state of readiness,” then be sure to include that phrasing in your resume as applicable.

From there, you can use your LPN cover letter to further elaborate on your experience, skills, and values and add more context to your resume. If your resume references experience preparing cesarean delivery rooms, for example, you could use your cover letter to describe how you would prepare such rooms, and key takeaways that you learned from doing so.

Interviewing for L&D LPN Jobs

No matter how much professional experience and training you’ve received, the interviewing process is never easy. Hiring managers have a short amount of time to find out who you are and whether your qualifications — and personality — are a match for their team.

It’s important to be prepared. Brush up on the types of labor and delivery nurse interview questions you might be asked and think about what hiring managers would be looking for in your answers.

Salary for Labor and Delivery LPN Jobs

Nationally, the average pay for LPNs is $60,790 per year, or $29.23 per hour. Keep in mind that a labor and delivery LPN salary will be better in some states compared to others. If you’re looking for the best pay rates, these are the states with the highest salaries for LPNs:
