Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.
Job Role Summary
The Clinical Nurse, RN may work in various nursing departments (Critical Care, Acuity Adaptable, ED, OR. MIPS, Family Beginnings, etc. and strives for improved patient care with a focus on positive outcomes and cost effectiveness through four primary roles of clinician, consultant, educator, and leader. Proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health’s mission
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
• Utilizes specialized knowledge and expertise to facilitate delivery of professional care to patients
• Strives for improved patient care with a focus on positive outcomes and cost effectiveness through four primary roles of clinician, consultant, educator, and leader
• Models for staff aspects of professional practice, problem solving, decision-making and critical thinking skills
• Serves as a resource for all health care providers in the coordination and management of patient care
• Intervenes with complex patients of populations in areas of acute care to develop appropriate plans of care to achieve optimal patient outcomes
• Develops critical thinking skills in nursing staff to positively impact patient's outcomes
• Rounds for outcomes” with patients, families, staff, physicians and members of the care team who help to provide care and services to our patients
• Encourages and demonstrates a team spirit within the work units and other departments
• Participates in the evaluation of staff by providing input, supporting development and coaching staff
• Helps to develop future staff and leaders within the unit
• Impacts patient care indirectly by developing, implementing and evaluating standards of care clinical practice guidelines, policies/procedures and through involvement in practice in the acute care environment
• Utilizes principles of performance improvement process to improve patient care in the acute care department
• Contributes to the educational process and professional development of nursing staff, students and other health care members through clinical role modeling, informal discussions and formal presentations
• Conducts one-on-one teaching for patients and their families to facilitate patient adherence to plan of care, promote a positive outcome, and develop patient independence
• Develops and implements educational material
• Provides consultative services to health team members and care delivery leadership in acute care
• Collaborates/consults with all areas of Eskenazi Health with the goal being to improve care provided across the continuum and to positively impact patient satisfaction and outcomes.
• Alters activities/behaviors to reflect/ensure adequate care appropriate to the age of patients served (i.e. adolescent, geriatric, pediatric, neo-natal, adult) as described in the area/unit age-specific and/or job specific competencies
• Supports and facilitates practice related change within the shared governance model via participation in Practice and Quality Councils
• Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of departmental and organizational mission and goals
• This encompasses understanding of regulatory readiness for the units providing service for; also provides oversight and expertise for clinical standards, policies, protocols and procedures for the staff who work in those units.
Job Requirements
• Current Indiana license as a Registered Nurse
• Bachelor’s degree preferred
• Expertise in the practice of nursing validated by five years of current clinical practice including two years in the area of specialty
• Certification within specialty area within 2 years of accepting position
• ACLS and BLS Certification required

• Demonstrates ability to help staff achieve their patient care and unit goals through effective communication and involving the staff as needed
• Demonstrates ability to help trouble shoot nursing and clinical issues that can’t be resolved by staff and whom to direct for additional assistance
• Ability to assess system needs and function autonomously to develop and implement staff educational programs to improve patient care
• Ability to collaborate with other members of the health care team to enhance all aspects of patient care across the continuum
• Ability to demonstrate leadership abilities by serving as a role model, mentor and change agent to influence patient outcomes
• Ability to demonstrate excellent communication skills related to team development, group process, conflict management, and negotiation
• Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served.
• Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data/interpret appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to age-specific needs. Ability to use age appropriate communication and cognitive skills detailed in the department/area/unit job specific/age specific competencies
