UPMC Hamot is hiring a Professional Staff Nurse to join the Women's Hospital OR!
As part of our team, you will gain experience in both the circulating nurse and scrub nurse roles. While we specialize in Women's Health, you will also have the opportunity to work in general surgery, plastic surgery, robotic surgery, and ENT.
We have five ORs and excellent relationships, working closely with the surgeons and anesthesia team. Join us in making a difference, one patient at a time.
Title and Salary will be determined based upon education and experience.

Purpose: The Professional Staff Nurse OR is a Registered Nurse who plays a crucial role in the care delivery team. They set care standards, manage patient care, and collaborate with other healthcare providers to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Their responsibilities include leadership, partnership, and supervision, ensuring high-quality nursing care. They also demonstrate a strong commitment to the community and the nursing profession.
Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates accountability for professional development to improve practice and patient care quality.
- Actively participates in unit-based shared governance and supports change processes. Engages fully as a partner on the care team, responding to team needs.
- Participates in work to improve patient care and the professional practice environment. Adapts to change and demonstrates flexibility.
- Applies the nursing process within Relationship Based Care to create a healing environment. Sets daily goals and plans of care involving patients as partners, considering their holistic needs.
- Uses critical thinking to identify clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual issues.
- Practices solid communication skills, articulating patient conditions and making care recommendations. Ensures comprehensive patient documentation to promote caregiver communication.
- Incorporates goals from national organizations and health systems to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction.
- Builds healing relationships with patients, families, and colleagues for a compassionate experience.
- Applies adult learning principles in teaching patients, families, students, and new staff.
- Provides detailed teaching to guide patients through care transitions. Supports the development of students, new staff, and colleagues; may serve as a preceptor.
- Encourages open dialogue and continuous development through feedback. Participates in quality improvement efforts and identifies opportunities for improvement.
- Takes personal responsibility for improving patient satisfaction with care quality and service. Utilizes research and evidence-based practice to enhance clinical care.
- Maintains productive working relationships by demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment.
- Understands cultural differences and promotes healthy relationships among peers.

- At least one year of prior nursing experience required, BSN preferred.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care.
- Understands principles of growth and development over the lifespan. Assesses and interprets patient data to identify age-specific needs.
- Provides care according to department policies and procedures.
- Establishes and maintains positive, caring relationships with various stakeholders.
- Works productively and effectively in a complex environment. Handles multiple and changing priorities and specialized equipment.
- Exhibits good clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities. Leads others in applying the nursing process.
- Possesses mobility, visual manual dexterity, and physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- UPMC approved national certification preferred.
- Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse required, either in the state where the facility is located or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement.
- CPR certification required based on AHA standards, including both didactic and skills demonstration components, within 30 days of hire.
- Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
