Job Duties
Performs patient care as a family nurse practitioner with limited or no on-site access to a physician
for guidance and oversight. Performs physical examinations, orders diagnostic tests, prescribes
controlled substances, may directly perform or direct others to perform nursing assessments, may
perform lab tests, take measurements, and develop and implement care plans including the
administration of medication and case management. Actions performed at this level require
licensure as a Certified Nurse Practitioner by state code.
The Prince William Health District is a growing, diverse, and dynamic community in Northern
Virginia located approximately 30 miles from Washington, D.C. This position will be based at Woodbridge location (4001 Prince William Parkway, Woodbridge, VA 22192), however travel between both locations (and other locations in the community) is required. Mileage reimbursement is available for any work-related travel. Typical work hours are 8:00 AM– 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Evening or weekend hours may be
required during emergencies or to manage special events.
VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one-time dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current year's seasonal influenza vaccination.
Minimum Qualifications
• Demonstrated knowledge of nursing practice and health principles, physical examination
techniques and findings both normal and pathological, disease states, diagnostic testing and limits of testing, and pharmacology
• Ability to perform and interpret physical assessments of adults and children, obtain medical history, perform and/or interpret diagnostic testing, formulate differential diagnoses and plan of care, and provide health education to clients
• Ability to develop patient management plans; excellent clinical judgement with ability to know the limits of practice and when to seek consultation
• Demonstrated ability to work without direct supervision, strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with staff, patients, and the public; ability to participate in educational and professional programs
Additional Considerations
• Prior public health or community health work with significant clinical experience in sexual
reproductive health, adolescent medicine, and family medicine.
• Experience with community outreach and engagement work, including networking to establish
clinical and community referral resource partners.
