JOB DESCRIPTION:
SUMMARY OF POSITION
Assists the physician(s) with patients. This includes preparing patients and the examination rooms, taking initial medical history for the chart, taking vital signs, making lab and x-ray appointments, and explaining the preparations to the patients. Assists physician(s) in all special procedures, including minor surgery, as required. Removes sutures, clean wounds, and apply dressings as directed by physician(s). Other duties may consist of notifying patients of lab results, giving allergy shots, immunizations. Can authorize and dispense medications prescribed by the doctor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides direct patient care under the supervision of a RN, NP, and/or Physician, evaluates outcomes, consults with other health team members as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
- Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment, under the supervision of a RN, NP, and/or Physician, on all patients as per policy. This includes neonate, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients and the general patient population.
- Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
- Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient’s age.
- Maintains current knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and his/her clinical condition.
- Medical and surgical asepsis is carried out during treatments and special procedures.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to co-workers.
- Demonstrates the ability to assist Nurse Practitioners/Physicians with procedures and perform services requiring technical and manual skills under the direction of a RN, NP and/or Physician.
- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identified and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and family.
- Interacts professionally with patient and family and involves patient and family in patient education.
- Formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning; includes family in teaching, as appropriate.
- Demonstrates the ability to perform treatments and provide services to level of licensure.
- Meets current documentation standards and policies.
- Maintains established office policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement program, safety, environmental and infection prevention and control standards.
- Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with office standards.
- Answers telephone calls in a professional manner; refers patient problems to Nurse Practitioner; schedules patient appointments.
- Ensures an adequate stock of supplies, including vaccines.
- Assists in cost containment through appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment.
- Maintains a good working relationship with all co-workers.
- Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Performs preventive maintenance.
- Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
- Response is appropriate to the patient in emergency or physically distressful situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned within the LPN scope of practice.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Effectively communicate via written, verbal, in person and virtual methods.
- Demonstrates knowledge of lab requirements, requisitions.
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Strong prioritization/organization skills.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education Level
High school diploma or equivalent.
Graduate of accredited LPN program
Years of Experience
One to three years of experience preferred.
Required Certification/Licensure
Current Indiana license
Current CPR certification or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
