JOB SUMMARY: The purpose of this role is to provide for the care needs of the patient with a focus on those treatments and services, which do not require state licensure. This care team member will provide for the hygiene, personal care, and activities of daily living, assist with tray passing and transport of patients, as needed, and measuring and recording vital signs. Some Nursing Assistants may do EKG tests. Some Nursing Assistants may also perform clerical support functions. JOB SPECIFICATIONS: EDUCATION High school diploma, GED or equivalent preferred EXPERIENCE A minimum of one year (1040 hours) of experience as a Nursing Assistant in an acute-care hospital or skilled nursing facility is preferred. Enrollment in a registered nursing program with completion of at least the first year of clinical instruction may substitute for the required experience. PREREQUISITE SKILLS Ability to read, speak, write clearly and legibly, and understand and follow English verbal and written instructions Ability to establish priorities and follow through on assigned tasks Ability to communicate clearly, and work tactfully and effectively with patients, visitors, physicians, team members and other hospital staff Knowledge of medical terminology Ability to learn current in-house computer systems Ability to work effectively as a team member and contribute positively towards the goals of the team and the organization Maintain a calm demeanor while working in an atmosphere of conflicting demands LICENSE/ REGISTRATION/ CERTIFICATION: Current employees hired since July of 1995 and applicants must possess and maintain a current CNA certificate (enrollment in a registered nursing program with completion of at least the first year of clinical instruction may substitute for the required CNA certificate) Applicants must possess and maintain Basic Cardiac Life Support for the Healthcare Provider certification according to hospital policy DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: ESSENTIAL (not modifiable) Obtains, records, and reports vital signs, body measurements, weights, intakes and outputs, and other patient data Provides hygiene, ADL, comfort and safety measures for the patients Provides routine assistance with positioning, ambulation, and transfers Assists with simple respiratory therapy treatments for patients May perform bedside EKG's and specimen collection Prepares patient for OR, diagnostic tests and transport, and assists licensed staff with simple procedures Provides troubleshooting and set up of equipment and assists other team members with treatments and procedures Sets up, observes, records, and removes traction. Maintains traction equipment and supplies Responds to Code 2000 on assigned unit Attendance at all mandatory classes and in-services per unit and hospital standards; for example, Mock Code, TB Testing, Safety Quiz Transports patients when necessary Passes patient meal trays when necessary Demonstrates competence in unit specific skills May be assigned to perform clerical support functions at the nursing station as determined by departmental shift-to-shift needs.
