Position Purpose:
Assumes responsibility and accountability for assigned ECMO patients.Manages the ECLS pump.
What you wil Do:
Demonstrates clinical competency and technical knowledge in the delivery and management of Extracorporeal Life Support including initiation of ECLS, circuit management, anticoagulation management, delivery of ACLS medications and blood products as needed, and continuous monitoring of appropriate physiologic data.
Must be capable of priming circuits, changing circuits, adapting circuits as needed and transporting ECLS patients.
May be required to assist with data collection.
Must be capable of managing ECLS patients via a 1:1 or 1:2 Specialist to pump ratio.
Must be willing to serve as a resource to other hospital services (nursing, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, respiratory, etc.), and the surrounding community by way of education and outreach.
Will be required to take regular call.
May be asked to present at M&M (mortality and morbidity) conference and provide technical education to the ECLS team and others as requested.
Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient care.
Audits patient records to ensure accuracy of patient care documentation and associated billing.
Utilizes critical thinking to make independent decisions and assumes responsibility for understanding the condition of assigned patients.
Assesses needs of patients and families, provides appropriate education, and makes necessary referrals to provide continuity of care.
Continues professional development by involvement in professional activities that enhance ECLS practices by sharing knowledge through networking and research.
Utilizes a holistic approach (considering psychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients and families served in the assigned service area.
Delegates and provides direction for other healthcare providers and holds them accountable for their involvement in the plan of care.
Consistently delivers high quality care while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills in accordance with established policies and procedures and standards of care.
Integrates and demonstrates CORE values and Expectations for Personal and Service Excellence to guide professional behaviors, while adhering to the policies and procedures of Mercy One Des Moines. Practice reflects knowledge of HIPAA, Joint Commission, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
Demonstrates patient and workplace safety by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting concerns or potential problems immediately.
Minimum Qualifications:
Possession of a current or compact state license as a registered nurse or respiratory therapist, or critical care paramedic issued/defined by the State of Iowa
2 years of critical care experience
Recommendation by Market Director of Critical Care Service, Nursing Unit Director, ECMO Coordinator, and/or ECLS Medical Director
Attend and satisfy all of the requirements of a formal course of study that is based upon the guidelines and recommendations set forth by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO), designed by the ECLS Program Coordinator, and approved by the ECLS Program Medical Director.
Complete (72) hours of supervised ECLS case management experience
First (36) hours obtained with a qualified preceptor at the pump
Remaining (36) hours obtained as the primary pump specialist with a veteran specialist as the patient’s bedside RN
Satisfactorily participate in an introductory (8) hour ECLS competency simulation workshop verified by the ECLS Coordinator and ECLS Medical Director.
