Certified Scrub Technician Lead

Job Summary: Anticipates the needs of the surgical team.Establishes and maintains sterile field during surgical procedures in the operating room. May have additional responsibilities as designated by the Nurse Manager of the Operating Room and/or Director of Nursing, which include, but are not limited to, serving on committees, participating in quality improvement audits and projects.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:Include the following.Other duties may be assigned:

1.Efficiently and effectively assists physician with operative procedures

·Anticipates surgeon/physician’s needs both in preparing for procedures and during procedure

·Demonstrates knowledge of specific responsibilities in all emergency situations.

2.Ensures sterility of all supplies and instruments during set up of surgical procedures.

3.Handles instruments in a manner which prolongs “life” of instrument.

4.Assists circulating nurse and surgical team in maintaining sterile environment.

5.Assists circulating nurse in gathering necessary surgical supplies and equipment.Is responsible for doing sponge, needle, and instrument count pre-operatively and intra-operative with the circulating nurse.

6.Gowns and gloves surgeons and assistants.

7.Assists in keeping physician preference cards accurate/updated.

8.Retains all specimens to be sent to pathology, confirming source/name of specimen with surgeon.

9.Transports all surgical equipment to appropriate cleaning areas.Assists in sterile supply with cleaning and reprocessing of instrument sets.

10. Interacts appropriately and effectively with all patients/others regardless of age or ethnic background.

11.Uses Standard Universal Precautions, appropriate hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, and safe practices to ensure personal safety and a safe environment.

12.Assists with environmental hazard and infection control surveillance and participates in emergency preparedness drills.

13.Follows all equipment and safety guidelines and is responsible for knowledgeable use and care of equipment.

14.Serves as a resource to other members of the health care team.

15.Attends in services, conferences, and meetings as required.

16.Communicates effectively and courteously with visitors, physicians, and their office staffs, patients, and employees. Maintains patient, physician, and employee privacy and confidentiality per policy.

17.Maintains designated certifications such as BLS and CST.

18.Acts in accordance with the vision, mission, and business philosophy of the Center.

19.Complies with Policies and Procedures, and adheres to safety guidelines to ensure a safe work and patient care environment.

20.Preceptor and educator for the core staff functioning as a Surgical Tech

21.Create and maintain surgeon preference cards

22.SPD Liaison and resource for surgeon needs and request

23.Materials Manager Liaison and resource to ensure the request materials and supplies are available, assist in establishing par levels.

24.Function in the capacity of Second Surgical Tech in advanced cases,

Education and/or Experience:Completion of a Scrub Technician Certification Program.Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Scrub Tech in multiple specialties or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred experience as Certified Surgical Tech First Assist and urologic surgical knowledge.
