Job Duties
Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property, with a scheduled completion date of 2027.
CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care, as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the person’s individual needs, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use.
Central State Hospital is currently recruiting Full-Time Registered Nurses that are experienced nurses who provide quality care to patients on the road to recovery from mental illness and are direct supervisors for other nursing staff members. The successful incumbents will need to demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with successful outcomes with an interdisciplinary treatment team and to implement an effective Nursing Plan of Care as part of an integrated interdisciplinary Treatment Plan. They will have considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of professional registered nursing to provide care appropriate to adult populations, including patient care treatments, wound prevention, falls prevention, and implementation of infection prevention and control practices and be able to make appropriate nursing assessments and interventions for existing or potential patient care needs. The successful incumbent must have the ability to safely and efficiently administer medications, assess effectiveness, and provide teaching to patient and family.
Job Duties:
- Utilize the Nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care delivery as reflected on the nursing parts;
- Utilizes the nursing process to provide age specific care for the unique physical and psychosocial needs of the psychiatric patients described in the Nursing Department’s and assigned unit’s policy and procedures.
- Observes and monitors age-related illnesses, physical characteristics, developmental tasks, and learning needs, using knowledge of the principles of human growth and development and corresponding patients care needs over the life span, notifying the NUM, AOD, RNC, or LIP/MOD in emergency situations or with any pertinent information as indicated.
- Attends and actively participates in treatment plan meetings. Develops and updates nursing related aspects of the integrated interdisciplinary Treatment Plan with specific goals and interventions delineating all nursing actions unique to patient needs.
- Provides and documents patient/family education to promote increased awareness, adequate knowledge and/or skills needed to assist patients in their recovery.
- Accurately acknowledges and verifies LIP orders in compliance with CSH policies. Set up medications from Pharmacy or obtains medication from PYXIS, administering medications, ensuring two patients identifiers, following medication administration procedures per policy.
- Accurately completes admission/transfer/discharge duties including but not limited to assessment, documentation, hand-off communication, and notifications as needed.
- Maintains open communication with NUM/RNC/AOD/Pharmacy concerning any related issues with the pharmacy program/forms and is receptive to assisting with corrective measures as assigned by RNC.
- Accurately performs selected nursing procedures consistent with departmental nursing competencies.
- Responds promptly to individual patient’s behavior, including aggressive outbursts/unit disruptions, utilizing least restrictive nursing patient-centered interventions in compliance with CSH Policies/Procedures.
- Provides CPR and first aid in emergency situations.
- Provides direct patients care duties as indicated.
- Supports psychiatric recovery concepts by participating in unit and treatment mall activities.
- Ensures adequate staff assignments and coverage of Special Staffing monitoring. Promptly notifies NUM, RNC, and/or AOD for any coverage issues/concerns.
- Increases the professionalization and reliability of on-unit Nursing led groups.
- Intervenes to promote, maintain, or restore mental health, prevent illness and/or affect recovery.
- Ability to perform infection prevention and control practices and appropriately apply standards in daily activities.
Minimum Qualifications
- License or eligible to practice as a Registered Nurse by Virginia State Board of Nursing in the State of Virginia;
- Graduate from an accredited school of Registered Nursing;
