Job Description Summary
The nurse manager provides professional nursing leadership responsible for promoting and restoring patients' health by developing day-to-day management and long-term planning of the patient care area within an assigned unit.
EmPATH Unit:
The EmPATH (Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment, and Healing) Unit is a specialized hospital-based observation unit dedicated to patients with mental health emergencies. The EmPATH unit is the designated destination for medically cleared patients with need for observation and treatment while awaiting disposition. The RN will work with a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, and assistants in a calming environment to provide treatment to adult and adolescent patients in need of mental health care. RNs on the EmPATH unit will be cross trained to work the geriatric psych unit.

Job Description
Work Environment:
Regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases. Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances. Exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, and illnesses). Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Must be able to handle emergency or crisis situations. May perform emergency care. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Oversees daily operations providing supervision of the Clinical Unit Leaders, licensed nurses, and unlicensed unit staff. May indirectly supervise others as needed.

Essential Functions:
Communicates with Director on a regular basis regarding day-to-day operational issues.
Collaborates with care team to develop individualized plan of care participating in Interdisciplinary Care Planning rounds.
Collaborates with Director in completing performance evaluations.
Rounds daily on every inpatient utilizing Studer principles.
Coaches staff in providing an optimal patient experience utilizing hourly rounding, AIDET, ACT, use of white boards, clinical care, etc.
Ensures appropriate staffing. Assists in the daily adjustments to staffing required to have appropriate nurse/patient ratios. Ensures compliance with matrix.
Assists in responding to Quantros SRM investigations, follow-up and re-training.
Provides first line customer service response and service recovery.
May assists with assigning and/or completing duties listed on charge nurse report sheet, including crash cart checks, narcotic counts and discrepancy resolution, etc.
Assists Department leaders in orientation of new employees. Works closely with Nursing Residency / Student Coordinator to ensure students and new graduates have positive orientation.
Assumes on-call responsibilities as assigned by director.
Reviews HCAHPS data and collaborates with director and patient advocate on performance improvement.
Maintains nursing guidelines by writing and updating policies and procedures Adopts and implements innovative evidence-based nursing practices to improve quality and safety of patient care. May recruit, select and guide nursing staff Supports nursing staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees Establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patient, and families All other duties as assigned

Sit, walk, stand, use your hands, reach, stoop, talk, hear, and smell. Lift or exert energy up to 50 pounds 25% of the time, up to 100 pounds 50% of the time, and more than 100 pounds 25% of the time.
Maintain close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors) and distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen move up/down or left/right) and depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances).
Mental Requirements:
Possesses the ability to read and interpret business or safety manuals, clinical or technical procedures or regulations. Able to write reports, correspondence, and/or manuals; effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, patients, families, other employees, and medical staff.
Able to perform math functions (add, subtract, multiply and divide), and perform more complex math functions to include calculating percentages, averages, volume, ratio, and interpreting graphs – using numbers, money, and units of measure.
Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Deals with concrete and abstract concepts and interpret verbal, nonverbal, and written instructions.

This position interacts with all age groups and provides direct/indirect patient care. Each staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to meet the physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related needs of the persons in the assigned work area.
Staff members must be able to understand and respond to the expectations and needs of patients, family members and visitors from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Minimum Qualifications:
Associate’s degree in nursing is required. Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred. For any staff with ADN, BSN completion within 2 years of hire is strongly encouraged. Must have a current license in the state of South Carolina as a registered nurse. Three (3) years’ experience in a clinical specialty required. One year of supervisory/ leadership experience and certification in a clinical specialty preferred. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required. ACLS certification is required within 6 months of hire.
