Director of Nursing, Marshalltown Hospital
Full-time, Monday-Friday
Responsible for strategic and operational leadership of clinical nursing. Provides oversight of the development of business, financial personnel and clinical programming that fosters growth, while meeting patient and provider expectations. Possesses overall managerial responsibilities for all aspects of patient care delivery for assigned areas and is accountable for the operational performance, including quality of services, financial performance and competitive market position. Works closely with Medical Staff to collaborate on advancing clinical outcomes and efficiency. Ensures all functions follow applicable regulatory guidelines and accrediting standards. Observes and practices within framework of the scope and standards for nurse administration.

Responsibilities
- Organization Leadership
- Provides leadership to unit/department by directing, coordinating and delegating patient care in an organized manner, allowing for flexibility.
- Interviews, hires, coaches, terminates employees and conducts periodic performance reviews.
- Accountable for staffing needs. Assists with completing schedules, address and review payroll as needed. Ensures staffing matrix and guidelines are followed for appropriate staffing to remain within budget.
- Responsible for coordinating staff education/in-services/specialized skilled training programs for their selected unit of responsibility.
- Effectively resolves complex unit situations, such as patient complaints and crises
- Conducts daily safety huddles on their selected unit and participates, as able in others.
- Rounds with team members monthly. Responsible for creating and maintaining a positive, energetic work environment for all team members on the unit.
- Evaluates and guides staff with appropriate input on job performance. Provides immediate feedback (positive and negative) about job performance to supervised personnel.
- Shares results of engagement surveys and develops action plans in collaboration with team members on the unit.
- Participates in UPH-Marshalltown meetings, as requested, by the Vice President of Nursing.
- Patient Care
- Assists staff in formatting desired outcomes and developing individualized care plans based on the nursing diagnosis and the plan of care. Assists staff in identifying and prioritizing nursing actions including patient safety needs, teaching and emotional support for the patient and significant others.
- Assists with patient admission and transfer activities, discharges, deaths, and autopsies.
- Keeps appropriate leadership informed of current departmental activities and problems through both oral and written communication.
- Assists in resolving medical staff problems/concerns.
- Completes patient rounds daily ensuring that team members are meeting the patient/family needs. Follow-up from rounds includes coaching and/or recognition of team members.
- Collaborates proactively with medical staff through physician contact with emphasis on patient care. Assures that physicians’ rounding needs are met. Also functions as a clinical resource to nursing, medical, and ancillary staff.
- Ensures the patient safety needs are met through implementation of technology and interventions available to team members.
- Performance Improvement
- Supports the unit-based performance improvement initiatives in data collection, data evaluation, and implementation of action plans, assuring performance improvement outcomes are met.
- Reviews RL-Quality and Safety Reports daily and completes thorough follow-up within seven days of event. Follow-up includes a plan of action to prevent further re-occurrence.
Qualifications
- Bachelors of Science in Nursing. Preferred Masters of Nursing.
- Three years of experience as a House Supervisor or Nurse Manager.
- Previous experience at the executive level of nursing in an acute setting preferred.
- License(s)/Certification(s): Current license in the state of Iowa or meets criteria established by Iowa Board of Nursing.
- Demonstrates the ability to meet the department work schedule.
- Creates an environment that promotes staff empowerment.
- Displays creativity and innovation when making recommendations for improvement in the delivery of services to the hospital.
- Able to instruct and lead the staff so that a high level of productivity is maintained, intervening when necessary, to problem solve
- Demonstrates the ability to fairly and consistently interpret, apply and follow personnel policies/procedures.
- Ensure high quality patient care and patient experience is delivered to the patients/families on their unit.
- Remains knowledgeable of and supports all new or existing policies/procedures/standards.
- Ensures compliance with regulatory bodies such as Department of Inspections and Appeals.
- Participates in activities to reduce readmissions.
- Serves as a role model to Nurse Managers; participating in the onboarding of Nurse Managers.
