Position Overview:
The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) will provide safe, compassionate nursing care as a member of the profession, provider of patient-centered care, patient safety advocate, and member of the health care team to serve the Refugee Clinic patients seeking refugee health screening services. The LVN, with a focus on patient safety, is required to function within the parameters of the legal scope of practice of an LVN, and in accordance with the federal, state, and local laws; rules, and regulations; and policies, procedures, and guidelines of Harris County Public Health (HCPH).
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Gives age-appropriate immunizations, stays up to date with all CDC vaccine schedule changes, and assists the nursing team with always providing CDC-recommended vaccinations.
- Serves as a vaccination coordinator alternate for the Vaccine for Children's (VFC) Program with the Texas Department of Health Services (DSHS).
- Works with the medical providers and the medical team to complete duties such as assisting with physical exams and medical procedures, administering/dispensing prescribed medication according to Pharmacy D regulations, and responding to emergency medical situations.
- Assists with patient screening (i.e., drawing blood, testing urine, taking/recording vital signs, and performing vision and hearing assessment).
- Receives, reviews, and prioritizes all laboratory results and ensures all abnormal laboratory values are documented in the electronic medical record (EMR) system, confirming that all abnormal laboratory values are flagged and reviewed by the medical provider for referrals or treatment as indicated.
- Assists with control of patient flow through the facility during clinic visits, including discharging patients from the clinic following the medical provider's care plan and providing appropriate patient education.
- Assists with medical inventory, including but not limited to vaccines and oral medications, ordering, and ensuring the clinic is appropriately stocked.
- Participates in performing quality assurance and checks on lab specimens and preparing specimens for transport.

Education
- Associate Degree, Vocational Certificate or diploma in Nursing.
Experience:
- One (1) year minimum full-time work experience as an LVN in a hospital or clinical setting
Licensure/Certification:
- Current licensure as an LVN in the State of Texas by the Texas Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certified (AHA approved)
- Valid TX Driver's License

- Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and navigating EMRs
- Excellent communication skills (verbal & written)

- Knowledge of current CDC recommendations for immunizations
- Ability to organize material, prioritize job tasks, make reliable judgments, and draw conclusions from verbal discussions and written data
- Ability to draw conclusions from data, such as lab tests, to record this information accurately in patient’s record, and to notify the Clinical Manager or medical providers when deviations occur

Experience:

- Experience working in refugee and/or global health

- Monday through Friday | 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
- Must be willing to flex work hours when required, including weekends
- Able to travel within Harris County as needed.
Work Environment:
- This job operates in a professional clinic environment, community setting, and occupationally a medical mobile unit.
- This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Physical Demands:
- This role requires the ability to lift, carry, push, pull up to 50 pounds and bending & standing for periods at a time.
