The role provides leadership in clinical strategy, innovation and standardization for Novant Health Behavioral Health nursing practice and patient care across the healthcare system. The role is accountable for the provision and delivery of quality, safe patient care. Including being consistent with the Novant Health mission, vision and values for compassionate, culturally competent behavioral health services to persons served. The role ensures that key areas are aligned for the continued development and implementation of a strategic plan for nursing.
Collaborates with organizational leaders and manages interdependencies across divisions to design and provide patient care services including development of patient care programs, establishment of standards of practice, standards of patient care, and policies and procedures. Participates with leaders from the medical staff, management, and clinical areas in planning, prioritizing, promoting, and conducting organization-wide performance assessment and improvement activities.

ResponsibilitiesThe Director of Nursing works closely with the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), and will collaborate with diverse teams in Nursing, Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), and Behavioral Health Techs to ensure that we are providing the best patient care for behavioral health patientst.
- Leadership: Ensures that nursing practice is governed by professional nurses. Participates in the leadership of the healthcare organization as a full member of the system’s leadership teams (Nurse Executive Council, Behavioral Heath Systems Operations Team, etc). Consistently models the mission, vision and values of Novant Health. Participates in the strategic planning of the healthcare organization, and leads the development of the vision and plan for behavioral health nursing. Provides operational leadership and guidance for all core processes. Effectively manages conflict and resolution. Serves as an agent of change. Identifies and removes barriers that impede established goals. Adheres to ethical standards. Seeks opportunities to engage in educational opportunities for ongoing personal development. Participates in professional organizations and community boards/activities. Maintains strong partnerships with local schools of nursing and the academic community at large.
- Quality Outcomes: Evaluates and revises systems and processes of nursing services to ensure achievement of nursing-sensitive patient, client and family centered outcomes. Demonstrates knowledge of process improvement principles and applies appropriately to improve patient care outcomes. Actively engages nurses, physicians, interdisciplinary team members and leaders to improve care across the healthcare system. Ensures ongoing innovation within nursing services. Facilitates the conduct, dissemination and utilization of research. Participates in programs that study and benchmark nursing sensitive metrics. Ensures integration of appropriate technologies to meet the needs of professional nursing. Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies
- Patient Engagement: Ensures the delivery of Novant Health service standards by nursing team members with timely service recovery, as needed. Monitors patient experience scores and co-creates strategies for improvement with team members and leaders, using internal and national benchmarks for targeting improvements. Serves as a patient advocate. Fosters a collaborative environment that maximizes the patient’s and family’s ability to make informed decisions. Provides opportunities for consumer input into policy development. Ensures delivery of culturally competent care
- Team Member Engagement: Establishes a strong professional practice environment, including interdisciplinary collaboration, shared governance, professional model of care, team member development and evidence based practice. Ensures registered nurse participation in decision-making at various levels of the organization. Actively guides nursing to align with strategic initiatives within the profession. Coordinated the development of goals, objectives and action plans to achieve staff education and development. Monitors team member engagement results and co-creates strategies for improvement with team members, leaders, and human resource partners. Serves as a professional role model and mentor to inspire, develop, recruit, and retain nurse leaders. Monitors the diversity of the nursing workforce in relation to local population diversity. Ensures a safe working environment.
- Financial/Business Acumen: Provides global oversight of capital and operational budget specific to behavioral health nursing and patient care. Manages positions within nursing services to achieve quality and productivity within budgetary guidelines. Leads strategic plan for identifying needed resources to meet patient care outcomes and ongoing nursing development. Guides nursing leaders in the processes to gain approval for capital and operational budgets. Acquires and allocates human, material, and financial resources for specific functions and processes. Develops collaborative partnerships to optimize key clinical and financial outcomes. Reviews and maintains job descriptions, department policies/procedures and other documents with emphasis on system standardization, as appropriate.
Qualifications- Education: Masters Degree Required.
- Experience: Five (5) years of clinical experience in nursing; minimum of three (3) years successful supervisory/management experience required.
- Licensure/Certification/Registration: Current RN licensure in appropriate state required. ANCC certification for mental health nursing and administration preferred.
- Additional Skills Required: Ability to successfully complete generic and department specific competency assessment. Current and future trends/practice in area of responsibility; regulatory and governing standards, policies and procedures; information systems and software used in area of responsibility; equipment used in performing assigned duties; application of safety and infection control policies and procedures; skills in interviewing and selection process; understanding of budgeting, staffing, payroll and purchasing processes; implementation of competency, feedback, development and progressive discipline processes; teambuilding, conflict management, and interpersonal relationship skills; principles of adult learning and teaching methods/models; decision making, project leadership and consultation, delegation and communication skills; understanding of customer needs and expectations and knowledge for improvement to exceed customer expectations.
