JOB SUMMARY:
(Nurse Practitioner)
The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse – Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse with specific education and training in the care of hospitalized patients. He/she is employed by St. Tammany Health System (STHS) for the purpose of coordinating care of hospitalized patients.
The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse -Nurse Practitioner works in collaboration with and under the supervision of the Lead Hospital Medicine physician and in association with members of the Hospitalist team in the evaluation, treatment and care coordination of the hospitalized patient in the provider role. A formal collaborative agreement is a requirement.
The major area of responsibility is addressing patient clinical issues while hospitalized (floor call) and supporting physicians with the admission of patients to the hospital from emergency room or direct admissions. He/she will work primarily the night shift and alternate other shifts, weekends, and/or holidays as indicated.
The primary duties of the Nurse Practitioner under the supervision of the Lead Hospital Medicine physician and in association with members of the Hospitalist team include:
- Addressing patient clinical issues while hospitalized
- Perform and document a H&P that is co-signed by the physician within 24 hours
- Placing orders for appropriate diagnostic and treatment modalities as part of the care plan
- Following up on diagnostic test results
- Seeking appropriate specialty and sub-specialty consultations
- Formalizing the patient handoff process as part of continuity of care
- Effective communication with patients, families, and colleagues that are part of the care team
- Perform and document a Discharge Summary that is co-signed by the physician within 24 hours
(Physician Assistant)
The Physician Assistant has specific education and training in the care of hospitalized patients. He/she is employed by St. Tammany Health System (STHS) for the purpose of coordinating care of hospitalized patients.
The Physician Assistant works in collaboration with and under the supervision of the Lead Hospital Medicine physician and in association with members of the Hospitalist team in the evaluation, treatment and care coordination of the hospitalized patient in the provider role. A formal supervising physician agreement is a requirement.
The major area of responsibility is addressing patient clinical issues while in the Clinical Decision Unit (Observation Unit) which includes admission of patients from the emergency room or direct admissions, unit floor calls, and discharge coordination. He/she will work primarily the night shift and alternate other shifts, weekends, and/or holidays as indicated.
The primary duties of the Physician Assistant under the supervision of the Lead Hospital Medicine physician and in association with members of the Hospitalist team include:
- Addressing patient clinical issues while hospitalized
- Perform and document a H&P that is co-signed by the physician within 24 hours

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
(Nurse Practitioner)
- Minimum Masters Prepared: Curriculum must include didactic in clinical experience in Acute Care
- Current Louisiana Registered Nurse License (RN)
- Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Licensure in Louisiana (APRN)
- Eligible for limited prescriptive authority in Louisiana as approved by St. Tammany Health System.
(Physician Assistant)
- Minimum Masters Prepared: Curriculum must include didactic in clinical experience in Acute Care
- Current Physician Assistant Licensure in Louisiana (PA)
- Eligible for limited prescriptive authority in Louisiana as approved by St. Tammany Health System.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must possess good physical health. Some requirements include but are not limited to standing, sitting or walking for long periods of time. Lifting at least 50 pounds is required. Must be able to work with a moderate level of noise.
Physical Effort required:
Constant (67%-100%) - hearing, seeing
Frequently (34%-66%) - handling/feeling, talking
Occasionally (1%-33%) - lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, stooping, crouching, reaching, climbing (stairs, ladders, etc.)
