This vacancy is located within the Nursing Department at Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System in Jackson, LA (East Feliciana Parish). ELMHS is the largest 24-hour, multi-site, state psychiatric complex, comprised of residential, outpatient and inpatient services.*This posting may be used to fill vacancies in other divisions or units at Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System within 90 days of closing.This position may be filled as either a Probational or Job Appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency wide permanent status employees); or by Detail to Special Duty. Two years of clerical experience in a patient care setting such as a medical clinic, hospital, mental health facility, facility for the developmentally disabled, or other type of healthcare facility.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
Experience as a nursing assistant will substitute for the required experience on the basis of two years of nursing assistant experience for one year of the required experience.
A certificate of completion from a medical assistant training program earned at a college or technical institute accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools will substitute for one year of the required experience.
An associate degree from a medical assistant training program earned at a college or technical institute accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools will substitute for the two years of required experience.
College training with nine semester hours in education, psychology, counseling, social work, sociology, child guidance, or nursing will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of the required experience.

Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

Differs from Nursing Assistant 1 and 2 by the presence of responsibility for clerical duties in addition to sub-professional nursing duties.
Differs from Medical Specialist by the presence of responsibility for clerical duties and the absence of responsibility for performance of specialized procedures in the care of orthopedic, urology, ophthalmology, and/or speech pathology/audiology patients.Answers the telephone, greets patients, updates and files patient medical records, fills out insurance forms, handles correspondence, schedules appointments, arranges for hospital admission and laboratory services, and handles billing and bookkeeping.
Abstracts, reviews, and enters patient registration data into patient database.
Verifies patients third party coverage; may speak with third party.
May compile employee time records; reviews time sheets for completeness.
Prepares patients for routine examinations, which includes obtaining, assessing, and recording vital signs. May take medical histories.
Assists practitioners to deliver health care services, treatments, examinations, and procedures for patients.
Performs EKGs, collects samples of blood and urine, and performs vision and audio testing.
Ensures health care delivery areas are fully stocked, organized, clean, and disinfected. Orders supplies, as needed.
Assist with cleaning and sterilization of equipment.
Assists in management of patient behavior utilizing therapeutic intervention techniques; restrains hostile and physically violent patients when necessary.
Provides constant visual monitoring and intensive care for extremely suicidal, combative, or disturbed patients to assure safety and well-being of the patients; documents appropriately.

Instructs employees (regular or medical related personnel), in general and/or specialized training courses in resuscitation and life support techniques and procedures, i.e., Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (BCLS and ACLS).
