Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts. The Chesterfield Health District provides public health services to the residents of Chesterfield County, Powhatan County, and the City of Colonial Heights. This position is based in Chesterfield and will require some travel to the Powhatan and Colonial Heights clinics.
The Practical Nurse A will follow specific protocol, provides direct patient care in clinics and patient homes. Characteristic duties: administers oral, IM, subcutaneous medications and immunizations, if a medications course has been completed and performed under supervision of a RN or Physician. Interviews patients for medical histories, counsels patients, teaches, instructs, obtains lab specimens and performs routine laboratory work, takes vital signs, refers abnormal findings to physician, prepares patients for
physical examinations and assists physician during examination. Licensure as Practical Nurse required by state code.

Minimum Qualifications
• Licensure as Practical Nurse required by state code.
• Knowledge of techniques and practices of the nursing profession, of public health practices, of quality assurance concepts, of teaching principles, of principles of decision making and problem solving techniques, of accurate record keeping and quality control, of socio-economic conditions relating to personal needs of clients
• Skills in performing technical procedures, in communication orally and written, in interacting with clients and the general public
• Ability to document clearly and accurately utilizing the health department’s accepted form of documentation, to establish and maintain working relationships with individuals and families to function as a team member
Additional Considerations
• Current CPR certification
• Prior experience in a public health or medical office setting
• Experience in phlebotomy and lab processes and procedures
• Bilingual in English and Spanish
