Cherry Hospital, an accredited State Psychiatric Hospital serving the eastern region of North Carolina, is recruiting a permanent full-time Psychiatric Physician Extender (Physician Assistant or Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner). Our 24-hour in-patient facility serves adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. The position is responsible for providing optimal assessment, treatment and disposition for all assigned patients. This includes screening and admission, the provision of psychiatric care at or above prevailing professional standards and the leadership of a multidisciplinary treatment team. All duties are performed under the supervision of the Cherry Hospital Assistant Clinical Director or designee. The Psychiatric PE and the supervising psychiatrist are ultimately clinically and legally responsible for patients under their care.

- Thorough knowledge of biological, social, and psychological developmental process at all ages including knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
- Specialized expertise and skills in the practice of psychiatry required to assess and treat patients who are seriously ill and often refractor to treatments in all other settings.
- Possess the ability to assess data reflecting the patient’s condition, to gather and interpret information needed to provide exemplary care.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other health care clinicians and support personnel is essential.
- Must have effective verbal and written communication skills.

Licensed as a Physician Assistant by the North Carolina Medical Board and holding a Psychiatry Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) and one year of experience

approved to practice as a Nurse Practitioner by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and the North Carolina Medical Board holding the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certification and one year of experience.

**Eligibility for Sign-on Bonus
Qualified applicants must be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:
“A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time employee who works 30 to 40 hours per week is eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working less than 40 hours per week).
An employee is not eligible for a sign-on bonus if:
(1) the employee has held a position in North Carolina State government, including the judicial system, or the University of North Carolina system within the last 12 months (the employee shall remain ineligible for 12 months from the separation date);
(2) the employee has previously received a sign-on bonus from any State agency;
(3) or DHHS has paid any contract placement or recruitment fees.
