RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participates in the development of an orientation/training and competency test for the Approved Medication Staff (AMS).
- Orients, trains, and tests potential AMS in passing of medication as requested.
- Participates in the identification of AMS as well as the monitoring of their on-going competency.
- Holds formal and informal reviews of the dispensing of medications (daily and weekly).
- Documents all findings, reviews, and meetings with the AMS and regarding the dispensing of medications to residents.
- Informs Director of any medication errors, or problems arising in the medication dispensing process.
- Participates in the removal of staff from the AMS status, if on-going competency is not displayed.
- Performs nursing screening on newly admitted residents and addresses identified nursing care needs on the individual service plan as appropriate.
- Monitors health related issues of residents and arranges for medical evaluations when required.
- Consults with physicians on medical issues and receives telephone orders for medications/treatment as appropriate.
- Documents nursing intervention and resident response on progress notes.
- Adheres to mandatory in-service requirements and participates in program in-services and outside offerings as appropriate.
- Provides education to families and residents related to health care issues and provides medication teaching according to Michigan Mental Health Code standards.
- Assists with procedures and physical exams; when requested, teaches infection control to residents/families and staff when issues arise.
- Administers medication outlined in the Medication Administration Policy.
- Reviews medical records, checks physician orders, and records such orders in a timely manner.
- Assists in training RCS staff in Vital Signs assuring completion of observed hands-on technique.
- Provides care to children/adolescents in a manner that considers safety, resident rights, comfort, level of development and the therapeutic environment.
- Assists with admission, discharge, and transfer of residents.
- Assists with resident trips outside the hospital transporting residents in hospital van, as needed.
- Observes resident behavior and reports this information to the appropriate clinical staff.
- Utilizes the treatment plan/treatment log in determining interventions with residents.
- Remains in resident areas whenever possible to assist residents and to assist in the ongoing functioning of the milieu.
- Sets limits on residents’ behavior.
- Assists residents with activities of daily living, encouraging independent behavior when appropriate.
- Intervenes to decrease the panic of disturbed residents.
- Assists residents during mealtimes, observes intake, and informs the RCS Supervisor.
- Completes all required paperwork (MDHHS; MIDAS; Program specific etc.) in an efficient and timely manner.
- Monitors vital signs as needed.
- Attends unit staff meetings, participates in staff development programs.

Qualifications - Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing required.
- Current and valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan required.
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.
- Three to five years of psychiatric experience with one to two year of management experience preferred.
- Current certification in Non-violent Crisis Intervention preferred.
- Current certification in BLS/CPR required.
