Do you enjoy working with the public? The Western Tidewater Health District is seeking a highly motivated Registered Nurse to join a team of professionals committed to providing public health services in the Southampton County Health Department.
The Western Tidewater Health District services the City of Suffolk, Isle of Wight County, Southampton County, and the City of Franklin. We assist in carrying out the VDH mission by detecting the needs of our community and providing quality care.
The public health nurse independently provides professional nursing care to patients in clinics, homes, and schools and other community or congregate care settings. Performs nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, develop and implement care plans, including the administration of medication and case management. Participates in public health emergencies and community health assessments. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a RN by state code. May supervise support staff.

VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one-time dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current year's seasonal influenza vaccination.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires licensure as an RN in Virginia or compact state. If a new graduate, must obtain RN license within 90 days of the date of hire or subject to termination per the regulations governing the practice of nursing. Requires BLS certification. Requires adherence to all safety policies including a review of immunizations, driver safety policies and all other state policies
Communicates verbally and in writing, to analyze problems, situations and suggest solutions, leadership, follow directions and establish priorities
Skills in physical examination, health assessment, and interviewing and counseling technique
Ability to function independently, prioritize and organize work, solve problems, adapt to change, function as a team member and relate to the public
Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing, principles of epidemiology; immunizations; basic nursing science, medical terminology, case management
May travel and some weekend and/or evening hours may be required
Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR
Additional Considerations
Experience in a public health setting or one related to disease prevention and health promotion
Experience working with children and adults in outpatient settings
Family planning, immunization and sexually transmitted infection clinical experience
Experience with TB management
BSN Preferred
