Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property, with a scheduled completion date of 2026.
CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care, as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the person’s individual needs, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use.
CSH invites applications for the position of Registered Nurse Clinician A (RNCA). This position is open to the International Nurse Program nurses.
We are currently hiring for 12-hour shifts: D/E 7:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. or E/N 7:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.
The Registered Nurse will utilize knowledge base and experience, provide quality nursing care to adult psychiatric patients through the nursing process in accordance with hospital policy and procedure and standards of nursing practice. Registered Nurses are also responsible for being informed of and skilled in the safe use of Seclusion/Restraints including knowledge of physical/emotional risk factors. Evaluates, supervises, documents and provides guidance in performance of staff.
Minimum Qualifications
-Current Virginia license to practice as a Registered Nurse; multi-state compact endorsement accepted.
-Ability to work on any ward requested
-Basic knowledge of assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care utilizing knowledge of pharmacology, psychiatric disorders, and physical, psychological and social
-Skilled in supervising, evaluating and counseling nursing employees
-Supervisory skills should include performance improvement activities, documentation, and effective leadership ability
-The ability to delegate nursing activities is also required.
Additional Considerations
-Bilingual applicants are highly preferred
-BSN is strongly preferred
-Strongly prefer experience in providing nursing care in healthcare setting according to the Nursing Process
-Strongly prefer experience working with people with mental illness, geriatric issues, and/or substance abuse
-Strongly prefer supervisory experience, however new graduates are encouraged to apply
