RN Manager, Operating Room

Responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of the care provided on the patient care departments(s), which is consistent with the established strategic plan, goals and objectives for Patient Care Services. Responsible for daily operations and 24-hour management of the patient care department. Supports optimal care that requires specialized knowledge, critical thinking and skills based on principles of psychological, social, physical, and biological sciences that utilize the nursing process. Demonstrates the attributes of Servant Leadership, communicates exceptionally, and motivates others to achieve outcomes through work with multidisciplinary teams. Serves as chief recruitment and retention officer for department and works in collaboration with nursing leadership to identify areas of improvement regarding practice, policies and processes. Collaborates with physicians and other health care workers, to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care while maintaining a practice environment that reflects the ANA Code for Nurses, Philosophy of Nursing at UnityPoint Health with in the structure of the Professional Nurse Practice Model and in collaboration with other care givers.
Responsibilities
- Directs staff in the development and implementation of departmental policies, procedures and programs. Adheres to governmental regulations.
- Recommends annual goals and objectives.
- Responsible for the overall staffing of the unit to including hiring, onboarding, facilitation of orientation program and training of newly hired team members, and team member performance management.
- Reviews/reassigns patient assignments based on assignment workload manager (if applicable), continuity and skill level of the team member. Coordinates scheduling and maintains appropriate staffing levels and effectively communicates with others to ensure staffing requirements are met.
- Coordinates staff education/in-services/specialized skilled training programs including competencies.
- Responsible for effectively resolving complex unit situations, such as patient complaints and crises as they occur within the unit.
- Evaluates and guides staff through coaching and provides immediate feedback and responds to difficult inquiries and problems. Demonstrates the ability to fairly and consistently interpret, apply and follow personnel policies/procedures.
- Provides feedback and input to team members for ongoing performance management.
- Completes and issues performance evaluations. Responsible for team member rounding.
- Responsible for performance improvement action plans and implementation of plans, monitoring of supplies/distribution and chart audits. Completes appropriate reports as delegated by Director.
- Responsible for all budget aspects of department. Reports all variances in the budget with justification to Vice-President and/or Hospital Operations.
- Identifies and coordinates process improvements.
- Ensures proper communications and plans are coordinated with other departments.
- Assesses the needs of patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and making the necessary referrals to provide continuity of care.
- Develops an individual plan of care using a collaborative approach with the patient/family and health care team.
- Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient’s care.
- Delivers high quality care utilizing the nursing process while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills of the specialty required on assigned unit in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards of care.
- Utilizes holistic approach (considering biopsychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients and families served in the assigned service area.
- Delegates and provides direction for other healthcare providers and hold them accountable for their involvement in the plan of care.
- Utilizes critical thinking in making independent judgments, and maintains responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients.
Qualifications
- Bachelors of Science in Nursing or equivalent. Masters in Nursing preferred.
- Current license in the state of Iowa or meets criteria established by Iowa Board of Nursing. Specialty certification preferred.
- 3-5 years knowledge and expertise in caring for patient populations.
- 2+ years of progressively more responsible management positions in hospital, outpatient, or clinical environment preferred. Previous leadership experience preferred.
- Ability to direct others and to exercise judgment in problem-solving scenarios.
- Ability to lead and/or participate in multidisciplinary teams.
- Must have successfully completed an accredited nursing program
- Must possess a comprehensive knowledge of general nursing theory and practice and an expanded knowledge of current clinical and specialized patient care concepts for emergency services.
- Must possess a broad and varied knowledge base that is continually enhanced and updated through self-directed study and participation in educational opportunities.
- Must possess knowledge of performance improvement and quality standards.
- Must possess knowledge of DNV and other regulatory standards.
