POSITION SUMMARY:
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides nursing care to patients in the Inpatient Program under the supervision and assignment of the Registered Nurse.
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) duties include but are not limited to:
- Assume duties under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) as outlined in policies and procedures.
- Provides care to patients in a manner that considers safety, patient rights, comfort and the therapeutic environment.
- Assists with admission, discharge and transfer of patients in a timely manner and completes necessary documentation.
- Administers medication; provides patient education related to medication and observes and reports signs and symptoms of side effect or adverse drug reaction to RN.
- Identifies medical problems and reports to the Charge Nurse.
- Provides general nursing care to patients who present with medical problems requiring nursing interventions such as dressing changes, etc.
- Assists with procedures and physical exams; teaches patients about infection control and general health maintenance.
- Identifies alterations in mood or behavior, recognizing potential for self-harm or high-risk behaviors. Communicates these issues to the Charge Nurse/designee.
- Assists in applying protective devices under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse.
- Utilizes the Individualized Treatment Plan and any specific treatment plan in determining interventions with patients; keeps treatment plan updates; reviews treatment plan with patient.
- Sets limits in a therapeutic and consistent manner on a patient’s behavior with the assistance of Registered Nurse within program guidelines and age-specific principles.
- Assists patient with activities of daily living, encouraging independent behavior with appropriate interventions on a daily basis and follows program guidelines regarding nutritional habits.
- Identifies verbal and non-verbal cues for potential aggressive behavior and applies de-escalation techniques to situation.
- Intervenes to decrease the panic of disturbed patients under the direction of the Registered Nurse. Uses the necessary intervention to de-escalate disturbed patients.
- Actively participates in Non-Violent Crisis Interventions at all times, as necessary.
- Serves as a role model for other nursing staff or patients by appearance, manner, attitude and tone.
- Participates in staff development programs. Keeps Charge Nurse/Nurse Unit Manager appraised of any difficulties or necessary changes required in program or staff development.

Qualifications
- Graduate from an accredited School of Practical Nursing required.
- Current status as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Michigan required.
- Must obtain Registered Nurse (RN) degree and licensure within thirty (30) months of hire.
- One year of experience in nursing with an additional year in psychiatric nursing preferred.
- Experience in administration of medication required.
- NAPNES or equivalent certification required within six (6) months of hire.
- Current certification in Non-violent Crisis Intervention preferred.
- Current certification in BLS/CPR preferred.
- Employee must be in good standing (employment/corrective action history, performance evaluation, etc.) to be considered for an internal transfer.
