Job Responsibilities
- Working in contract role in a local acute facility for a designated time period (usually 10-15 weeks)
- Being accountable to follow the Patient Care Plan as defined
- Delivering comprehensive nursing care to patients with mental disorders that can include anxiety, mood, psychotic, eating, dual diagnosis, personality, obsessive compulsive, post-traumatic stress, and substance abuse withdrawal
- Administering medical and psychiatric medications as prescribed
- Conducting thorough nursing assessments upon patient admission and throughout their hospital stay
- Performing regular patient safety rounds and conducting vital sign monitoring multiple times per shift as designated
- Utilizing psychiatric assessment scales to evaluate patient status
- Maintaining accurate documentation in the Electronic Health Record (EHR), ensuring that all patient vital signs, interventions, treatments, and observations are recorded
- Using therapeutic communication techniques to establish rapport and trust with patients
- Implementing de-escalation strategies to manage and mitigate challenging behaviors
- Supporting patients through crisis situations with empathy, respect, and professionalism
- Coordinating care with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized treatment plans
- Responding promptly and effectively to psychiatric and medical emergencies, ensuring patient and staff safety
- Facilitating patient therapeutic activities as part of the milieu treatment plan
- Educating patients and their families about mental health conditions, treatment plans, and strategies for managing symptoms
- Ensuring compliance with hospital policies, state laws, and regulations governing psychiatric nursing care
Qualifications and Skills
- Current Virginia state Registered Nurse (RN) license (Compact allowed)
- Graduation from an accredited ADN or BSN nursing program
- Crisis Prevention Institute's (CPI) or Managing Aggressive Behavior (MAB) certification may be required
- Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification
- Minimum of 8 months of experience as an RN in an inpatient psychiatric unit
- Strong understanding of psychiatric disorders and treatment modalities
- Familiarity with psychiatric assessment tools and scales
- Ability to recognize and respond to signs of psychiatric crisis
- Commitment to maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and staff
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs
