Job Duties
SWVMHI in Marion, VA (Smyth County) is recruiting a 12-hour, PM Shift Registered Nurse II to join its dedicated and talented Nursing Service Team.
Position Hours: 6:30 p.m.- 7:00 a.m. Working at Least Every Other Weekend
Shift Differentials and Weekend/Holiday Supplements Available
Registered Nurse II (RN II) nurses receive specialized psychiatric care nursing training and assist individuals served with mental health recovery. RN IIs may perform admission
assessments and other comprehensive assessments or evaluations as part of the nursing
process. RN IIs may participate in treatment planning and pass/discharge preparations,
Medication/Treatment Nurse, Admission Nurse, and assist with other duties and routines
associated with the unit or delivery of nursing care.
RN IIs assist people in recovery from mental illness by:
• Using the Nursing Process to implement and evaluate nursing care delivery as reflected
on the Nursing Care Plan part of the individual’s Initial Plan of Care
• Creating healthy interpersonal interactions with individuals on adult acute admission
units, geriatric unit, and extended rehabilitation service unit
• Maintaining accountability in a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment for forensic
and civilly committed individuals who have a primary diagnosis of a mental illness
• Administering medications, providing treatments, assisting with individual/family
activities and education, and other direct care services
• Being part of an interdisciplinary and interdepartmental team to provide, observe,
communicate, document, and encourage interventions, treatments, and behaviors that
promote holistic well-being
• Utilizing nursing experience and education to meet client care needs beyond the
individual to include the family and community
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required to successfully perform the work:
• Experienced Psychiatric Nurse
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with successful outcomes with an
interdisciplinary treatment team and to implement an effective Nursing Care Plan as
part of an integrated interdisciplinary Comprehensive Treatment Plan
• Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of professional registered
nursing to provide care appropriate to adult and geriatric populations, including client
care treatments, wound prevention, and falls prevention
• Ability to safely and efficiently administer medications, assess effectiveness and provide
education to client and/or family
• Ability to perform infection prevention and control practices and appropriately apply
standards in daily activities
• Demonstrate oral, written, and electronic skills to adequately communicate with others
including client, family, and other customers; complete medical record documentation,
and “hand-off” information satisfactorily to other caregivers
• Demonstrate successful interventions to manage conflict including crises and aggressive
behavior, motivate others, work effectively in a constantly changing environment, and
able to tolerate emotional stress
• Some knowledge of mental health laws that pertain to clients admitted to SWVMHI, and
of accreditation/regulating organizations that establish standards
• Computer skills to perform document development, learning tools, and electronic
communication
• Ability to hear and see in order to assess and respond to safety concerns
• Ability to adhere to scheduling requirements as described by policy and able to work
overtime
in a staffing emergency
• Demonstrated ability to effectively inspire and lead others toward facility goals
• Ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing
acute symptoms of mental illness, ID/DD, and/or additional forensic/legal involvement
• The following physical requirements are necessary: repetitious walking and/or standing;
bending, lifting and reaching overhead to position, restrain, transfer, transport, and/or
escort
individuals, and to perform or assist in activities of daily living
Minimum Qualifications
1. Require License or eligibility to practice as Registered Nurse by the Virginia State Board of
Nursing in the State of Virginia
2. Require graduation from an accredited school of registered nursing.
Additional Considerations
1. BSN preferred
2. Experience in a psychiatric, healthcare facility, acute care, long-term care or correction
setting is considered.
3. Supervisory experience considered.
