About the APP Manager Role and Department of Neurosurgery
The Department of Neurosurgery (DONS) at Mass General Hospital (MGH) is a nationally acclaimed program with over 27 neurosurgeons, 21 residents, and over 340 department staff and volunteer members. Our clinicians perform over 4,300 surgical procedures and over 20,000 clinical visits across its robust network. The right candidate would join a highly functional, fast-paced, multidisciplinary team dedicated to providing patient-focused, world-class neurosurgical care.
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Manager for the Department of Neurosurgery will lead, supervise, and coordinate the daily activities of Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners in both the ambulatory and inpatient clinical settings. This currently includes almost 30 highly qualified individuals.
This role works collaboratively with the DONS administrative and physician leaders as well as with each advanced practitioner. S/he will lead and participate in team building, scheduling, quality improvement, and staff development. S/he will establish and maintain a professional practice model that supports high-quality, efficient care for patients and families in an environment that fosters professional mentorship, collaboration, and support. He/she will work to promote the service and help to guide its strategic direction in concert with the Sr. Administrative Director and Clinical Director. The APP Manager will take on a leadership role in the implementation of the goals of Mass General Hospital, as well as the Department. Clinically, this individual will serve as a PA for the Department and will assist the Attending Physicians in all areas of patient care.
- Leadership and Supervision: The APP Manager supervises and coordinates the daily activities of nearly 30 Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners in both ambulatory and inpatient settings, ensuring effective team management and optimal staffing levels.
- Clinical and Administrative Responsibilities: This role requires balancing direct patient care (60% of work hours) with key administrative tasks (40% of work hours), including interviewing, hiring, and evaluating staff, maintaining credentialing, and overseeing payroll accuracy.
- Team Building and Development: The APP Manager leads the development and implementation of training and professional development programs for advanced practice staff, supporting a professional practice model that promotes high-quality, efficient patient care.
- Strategic Planning and Collaboration: The APP Manager collaborates with administrative and physician leaders on strategic planning, priority setting, and process improvement initiatives to enhance clinical operations and patient care quality within the department.
- Standard Setting and Clinical Excellence: The APP Manager sets and monitors standards for patient care provided by Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants, serving as an exemplary provider, especially in complex cases, and guiding clinical excellence.
- Operational Oversight: Plays a critical role in maintaining the operational efficiency of the department, including managing staffing patterns, coordinating coverage for absences, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and institutional policies.

Skills and Experience
- Demonstration of progressive leadership experience preferred.
- 5+ years of experience as APP required.
- 2+ years of experience in management required.
- Two or more years of experience in the Department is preferred.
Education/Degree
- Must be a graduate of a 2-year graduate-level program approved by the AMA Board of Approval and Certification of Physician Assistant Programs or
- Master's in nursing
Licensure, Certifications, or Registration
- Board certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required or
- Licensed Nurse Practitioner
