Responsibilities
Hours for this role are Monday - Friday, 8a-430p
Provides ancillary support in an outpatient psychiatric clinic by performing duties as delegated by the psychiatric nurse and/or provider and within the Medical Assistant scope of practice. Collaborates with the RN, LPN, and/or provider to coordinate psychiatric services for patients experiencing psychiatric/mental health disorders in the clinic setting. Requires knowledge of medical practices, which can be gained only through an accredited school. Oriented and educated in gender, cultural differences and in age appropriate care.
Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
- Provide care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to the patient’s developmental age and to the patient’s and family’s diversity, preserving their autonomy, dignity, and rights.
- Track and communicate pertinent medical and psychiatric information both verbally and through written documentation in EHR.
- Perform duties assigned by physicians, nurse practitioners, RNs, and LPNs.
- Perform appropriate interventions as ordered by providers in an accurate and timely manner including testing such as EKG, UA/UC, venipunctures, UPT, Genesight, and TMS monitoring/certification. Document results and provide safe handoffs to providers about the results.
- Maintain safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing and following operating guidelines, policies and procedures.
- Screen calls from patients and families, address the need and/or transfer the call to a member of the clinic nursing support team based on their scope of practice.
- Monitor and address requests received in the task management system, forward task to a member of the clinic nursing support team based on their scope of practice.
- Maintain confidentiality in matters related to patients and families.
- Knowledgeable of and perform safe infection control practices including good hand hygiene, standard precautions, cleaning equipment and the environment, and teach patients’ practices such as washing their hands and covering their cough.
- Ability to intervene in pre-crisis or crisis situations by utilizing de-escalation techniques.
- Ensure medication refills are completed according to policy and under the supervision of a psychiatric nurse and/or provider.
- Administer injections in a safe manner consistent with clinic protocol and under the supervision of a psychiatric nurse and/or provider.
- Obtain insurance pre-authorizations for medications and track prior authorizations.
- Maintain clinic laboratory by keeping the lab stocked with adequate medical supplies.
- Assist in completing and coordinating referrals.
- Communicate effectively with interdisciplinary team members. Collaborate with team, seek timely advice, and give and always accept feedback to ensure safe patient care.
Qualifications
- High School graduate or equivalent required.
- Completion of Medical Assistant or LPN program.
- Certified Medical Assistant through AAMA preferred.
- Previous experience working in a medical office required.
- Previous mental health experience preferred.
- Problem solving—ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner and gather and analyze information skillfully.
- Ability to communicate and make safe judgment calls in stressful situations.
- Interpersonal skills—Ability to maintain confidentiality, remain open to others’ ideas and exhibit willingness to try new things.
- Ability to communicate in a professional manner in both verbal and written format and models a positive teamwork attitude.
- Ability to react quickly and calmly as part of a team to handle volatile and potentially emergent situations.
- Ability to multi-task, use time efficiently, and prioritize appropriately.
- Must have basic computer skills using Microsoft Office products and EHR.
- Judgment—ability to display willingness to make decisions, exhibit sound, accurate, and ethical judgment and make timely decisions.
- Quality management—ability to look for ways to improve and promote quality and demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness.
- After training, be able to manage disruptive and explosive patients.
