Job Summary:
Provides care to patients under the supervision of the registered nurse, to ensure the delivery of comprehensive, safe, effective, and appropriate nursing care for patients across the age continuum in accordance with established hospital policy and nursing practice standards. In addition, demonstrated the ability to assist physicians in procedures if needed.
Skills and Abilities:
- Assists in preparing unit, patients' rooms, and patient beds for receiving patient admission or returning surgical patients according to established department policies.
- Maintains bed and room in a clean, net, and comfortable manner, removing supplies and equipment not in use, placing furnishings and equipment out of the patient to provide a safe, neat, and organized area.
- Performs delegated procedures including obtaining and recording vital signs, measure and recording intake and output, recording weights, collecting required specimens, and additional special procedures as directed.
- Reports any changes observed in condition or behavior of patient to appropriate nursing personnel.
- Documents care given to patients on appropriate charting forms.
- Follows standard /isolation precautions and safe practices in handling of biohazardous material. Appropriately handles clean and dirty linen.
- Describes and/or explains activities and aspects of care to be performed to the patient and family. Reports patient and family concerns to the RN. Refers questions requiring advanced knowledge to the RN.
- Follows chain of command reporting directly to Clinical Coordinator when concerns arise.
- Responds to patients' family calls and requests within 5 minutes
- Predictable and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position
- Adheres to all Hospital Policies and Procedures, specifically Guidelines for Appropriate Conduct, Corporate Compliance, Diversity, and Confidentiality.
- Identifies potential risks to patients; identifies risks to patients in order to reduce incidence of injury; identifies actions to eliminate, minimize or report risks; identifies procedures to follow in the event of an incident; reports processes for common problems, failures and user errors.
- Demonstrates the spirit of the philosophy, mission, and values of the hospital through words and actions and implements them into departmental processes, programs, and the working environment.
- Applies the principles and values of customer service and continuous quality improvement while performing day-to-day activities of the position.
- Maintains and protects confidentiality regarding all aspects of patient care, personnel and strategic issues.
- Adheres to Confidentiality Policy.
- Maintains positive working relationships and fosters cooperative work environment.
- Adheres to the hospital's "Guidelines for Appropriate Conduct" in the HR Manual.
- Displays honesty and mutual respect when communicating with peers and other departments.
- Assists front desk coordinator with pulling and scanning test results, and with maintaining chart room
- Complies with National Patient Safety Goals.
- Universal precautions and infection control guidelines, including hand washing guidelines followed at all times.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of duties in this job classification
- Demonstrates respect for diverse backgrounds of all patients, families and co-workers.
Training, Education, & Experience Requirements:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.; graduate of an accredited Certified Nursing Assitant Program
- One (1) year experience in a hospital setting.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through AHA or ARC accredited program
- Certification in North Carolina as a Nursing Assistant. NAI required, NAII preferred.
- Effective communication skills; both orally and written.
- Computer skills needed.
- Ability to work with others within a team to ensure quality patient care.
- Strong critical thinking skills.
