Job Summary:
The registered nurse is a professional practitioner who delivers patient care through the nursing process.
Functions and Duties:
- Collaborates with the patient, family and healthcare team to promote positive patient outcomes
- Assess and reassess patient clinical condition, which includes objective and subjective assessment data.
- Develop, implement and evaluate a patient’s Plan of Care.
- Utilize critical thinking skills for patient care and daily operations.
- Demonstrates clinical competencies and skills applicable to unit.
- Coordinates, initiates, and validates teaching based on identified learning needs of the patient and designated support person.
- Manages, administers and reconciles medications.
- Documents patient care, interventions and responses in the electronic health record (EHR) timely and accurately.
- Delegates appropriately according to skill level.
- Triage according to the ESI triage algorithm.
- Manage sexual assault victims care, paperwork and evidence.
- Medication management including Omnicell and refrigerator monitoring.
- Facilitate patient flow.
- Prioritize and delegate tasks related to patient care.
- Clear communication with First Responders in the Community (EMS).
- Knowledge of role in codes including but not limited to:
- Inside Response Team
- Outside Response Team
- Code Blue in ED
- Code Blue in house
- Code Blue on grounds
- Express Team
- Code Green including the function of the Decon Room
- Other hospital codes
- Clear and sensitive communication with patients and families who are dealing with various stages of trauma and tragedy.
- Management of an expired patient including but not limited to:
- Coroner notification
- M transplant notification
- Funeral home notification
- Morgue placement
- Patient belongings
- Family physician notification
- Police if required
- Safe management of Behavioral Health patients in acute crisis.
- Transfer management per EMTALA guidelines.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
Experience
- Greater than one (1) year of working experience in a similar unit with comparable patient acuity is preferred.
Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations
- BLS certified required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within 1 year of hire
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or equivalent within 1 year of hire
- De-Escalation training within 6 months of employment.
- Current Illinois RN State licensure required.
Skills and Abilities
Physical Demands:
- Sit or stand for a prolonged period of time
- Regularly exposed to body fluids with the risk of bloodborne pathogens or airborne pathogens
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) (mask, gown, gloves) when required.
Lifting/transferring
- Able to lift 25 pounds from floor to waist using proper body mechanics
- Able to transfer or position clients greater than 50 pounds with assistance or assistive devices
- Requesting assistance is expected
Pushing/pulling
- Required in positioning and moving clients and medical equipment. Pushing required performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
Stooping/kneeling/reaching
- Considerable twisting, bending, stooping, kneeling and reaching during many aspects of clients care (bathing, making beds, setting up and monitoring medical equipment)
Motor coordination and manual dexterity
- Able to use one or both hands for grasping, pushing/pulling and fine maculation to perform procedures
Tactile sensation
- Able to feel vibrations, temperature changes and pulses
Eyesight/vision
- Near acuity: clarity of vision at 20 inches or less; with 20/40 vision or better with or without correction.
- Far acuity: clarity of vision at 20 feet or more; with 20/40 vision or better with or without correction
- Able to accurately read labels and prepare medications. Read written communication and monitor medical equipment findings.
Temperament
- Ability to adapt to continually changing environment
- Able to accept constructive criticism and accept own limits
- Emotional and mental stability needed to maintain a therapeutic relationship with clients, families and health team members.
Hearing
- Must be able to hear a forced whisper at 5 ft.
FLSA Statement:
This position is classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Employees in non-exempt positions are entitled to receive overtime pay for any hours worked over 40 in a workweek in accordance with state and federal regulations.
