Description
Job Summary: Responsibilities include pre-admission assessment of mothers, provision of education and coordination of necessary services prior to admission for birth of baby. Provides follow-up visit for mother and baby post discharge to include coordination of services needed post partum.

Job Responsibilities:
1. Supports Patient Bill of Rights by respecting cultural, religious and ethical diversity.
2. Responds appropriately to infant security, hospital code and patient alarms, including required documentation.
3. Uses effective communication skills with patients, staff, other departments, physicians, families and visitors.
4. Provides age and population specific patient care in a safe, skillful, accurate and efficient manner to newborn, adolescent and adult populations.
5. Completes documentation accurately and in a timely manner, according to hospital policy and procedures.
6. Assesses patient and family learning needs and provides ongoing education and evaluation. Documents readiness to learn, teaching, barriers and outcomes. 7. Effectively utilizes the nursing process to ensure optimal nursing care and patient outcomes.
8. Engages in activities to expand and /or enhance the professional nursing role, which include integrations of research and evidence based practice.

10. Assesses mother and newborn at the post partum follow up visit for normal healing, growth and development. Consults with physician regarding abnormal findings to include coordination of follow up services as needed.
11. Evaluates jaundice in the newborn to include: Trans-cutaneous Bilichek, serum Bilirubin if indicated, and facilitating home phototherapy if ordered.
12. Administers follow up hearing screen if needed to include notifying infant’s physician of results and sending report to chart in medical records.
13. Maintains Birth Registry to include adding all completed pre-admit interviews and deleting patients who have had a miscarriage, stillbirth or fetal demise.
14. Maintains daily log of patient visits.
15. Completes preadmission interviews with patients at 36 weeks or greater gestation.
16. Additional responsibilities may include:
a. Maintaining monthly statistics as requested by the Clinical Director including percentage of delivered patients that returned for their follow up visit, number of Bilichek and serum Bilirubins drawn and home phototherapy units set up.
b. Cross referencing patients known to be due in the following month with those scheduled for appointments for their pre-admit interview and contacting patients that have no appointment..
c. Coordinating staff schedule to assure coverage for needed pre-admit and follow up appointments; accommodating, when possible, requests for vacation and personal days.
Qualifications
Education Requirements and Other Requirements:
Education Level: Graduate of an accredited nursing program. BSN preferred.
Certification/Licensure: Illinois licensed or eligible, BLS.
Experience Requirements: Minimum of 2 years Obstetrics experience required.
Working Conditions:
Exposure Category I: Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. All procedures or other job-related tasks that involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids, or tissues, or a potential for spills or splashes of them, are Category I tasks. Use of appropriate protective measures is required for every employee engaged in Category I tasks.
