Summary
Under general direction of nursing leadership, the Clinical Supervisor RN position is responsible for serving as a clinical resource and unit expert for staff. This position links nursing leadership with nursing care through the application of organizational and nursing service policies, procedures, and care delivery model.
The Clinical Supervisor RN uses the
Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements to guide leadership and practice.
The Clinical Supervisor RN attains knowledge and competence reflective of current nursing practice; promotes innovation and futuristic thinking by incorporating evidence based practice and research findings.
Responsibilities
(40%)* Assesses competency of staff, and functions as a liaison to facilitate staff completing and maintaining their unit competencies. Acts as a resource and role model for clinical practice, develops and maintains excellent collaborative relationships and channels of communication with members of the nursing care teams, including essential service leadership. Helps in development and delivery of process improvement strategies, and assist in promotion of teamwork and care delivery in times of need. Focuses on developing and enhancing clinical knowledge, technical skills, clinical decision-making and professional practice standards for nursing staff.
(20%)* Complete focused rounding for all patients, with nursing staff, within 24 hours of admission and as needed. Participates in direct patient care when appropriate, ensuring that best practices are in place, and standards of care are being followed. Promotes multidisciplinary rounding.
(20%)*Collaborates effectively with physicians, nurses, and other health care providers to assist in the best care delivery, efficiency and planning of patients. Makes recommendation as appropriate for progression of total plan of care to achieve desired outcome in a timely and cost-effective manner. Continuously promotes the most excellent patient experience possible and when appropriate works with Director, Manager, and nursing staff to correct deficiencies.
(10%)*Serves as a clinical resource person for staff, patients, and families. Identifies and assists in providing patient and family education. Participates in Unit Practice Council, assisting with unit cohesiveness, teamwork, and positive morale. Routinely audits nursing care clinical documentation and care delivery for regulatory compliance as well as ensuring adherence to quality and safety related initiatives. (10%)*Provides up-to-date patient status report to manager/shift administrator as needed. Creates and maintains open line of communication to nurse manager and shift administrator. Fosters a dyad relationship with manager and communication demonstrates a symbiotic relationship. Demonstrates ability to accept and delegate responsibility, make sound judgments and accurately assess when to refer issues to the Nurse Manager.
Certifications and Licensures
- ACLS: Advanced Cardiac Life Support
- Equivalent Experience: Within 12 months of hire or transfer
- BLS: Basic Life Support
- Equivalent Experience: Within 3 months of hire or transfer
- RN: Registered Nurse
- TEAM ADVANCED: Techniques for Effective Aggression Mgt
- Equivalent Experience: Within 6 months of hire or transfer (Employees who are in this position on or before 12/31/2023 will have 24 months to complete this certification)
Required Education
- Education: Associates Degree
- Equivalent Experience: Bachelors degree in nursing preferred.

Other Duties And Responsibilities
Demonstrates knowledge of and experience with current best practices in the area of specialty care for the designated unit.
Completes all training expected of staff, and demonstrates clinical expertise in the specialty clinical area for units assigned ie: Progressive Care, Oncology care, Surgical, Neuro, and/or Medical step down.
Identifies needs, assists in development and implementation of programs in corporation with Department of Education for orientation, staff development and continuing education for staff.
Maintains Process Improvement programs for patient care.
Acts on recommendations of audit committees and physicians.
Assists in the development of standards of care.
Initiates and participates in development of nursing standards, policies, and procedures.
Assists in the instruction and supervision of nursing care given by staff.
Provides manager with input for Job Performance Reviews (JPR’s), if requested.
Sets realistic short and long range performance goals and evaluates progress.
Takes responsibility for continued professional development and advancement of clinical practice.
Assures compliance with all policies, procedures, regulations, standards and laws such as but not limited to Joint Commission, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and Michigan Department of Public Health (MDPH).
All other duties as assigned.
Equivalent Experience And Other Comments (Education)
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of nursing practices and procedures as normally acquired through 3 years’ experience working in a Medical Center or similar setting.
Knowledge of nursing leadership as normally acquired through working 1 year in a Medical Center or similar setting with involvement in supervision, charge nurse, project implementation, professional development program, shared governance leadership role, or equivalent.

Physical/Mental Requirements And Typical Working Conditions
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
