Younker 8 is a 23 bed Medical Surgical unit that provides an enriching learning experience while caring for patients with a variety of diagnoses specializing in pulmonary conditions. Younker 8 offers opportunities to advance critical thinking skills and nursing autonomy within our multidisciplinary team. Collaborative Care enables all members of the multidisciplinary care team to practice at the top of their scope – leveraging your unique skills, training, and strengths. As a CMA, you will work alongside licensed staff to provide care for a specified group of patients, utilizing the skills you have gained in obtaining your certification. With the support of an RN and other team members of the care group, you will perform tasks or skills within your scope of practice, including but not limited to:
- Provide safe and reliable patient centered care with support and supervision of an RN.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members.
- Manage care with ongoing vitals, intake and output, and complete bedside procedures (e.g., foley, NG, dressing changes, drains, etc.).
- Administer medications as ordered by the provider and delegated by the RN.
- Support patient education as delegated by the RN.
- Document in the electronic medical record.

Responsibilities
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) works with providers, nursing, and patient care techs to help support patient care needs on the inpatient med/surg unit. In coordination and as delegated by the nurse, the CMA may complete the following tasks, but not limited to taking patient vital signs, performs dressing changes, passes non-controlled and non-intravenous medications, and supports admission and discharge tasks on the unit.
- As delegated by the nurse, the CMA assesses patient's status through interview, observation and physical assessment of actual problems and outcomes
- Assists the nurse in the development of an individualized plan of care using a collaborative approach with the patient/family and health care team.
- Implements appropriate interventions identified in the plan of care to achieve expected patient outcomes
- Systematically evaluates and documents patient's progress toward expected outcomes/goals on an ongoing basis throughout the shift as directed by the nurse
- Modifies plan of care based on evaluation as directed by the nurse.
- Completes required documentation as appropriate, including patient charting and event reports
- Acquires and maintains current knowledge and skills in evidence-based practice
- Shares clinical knowledge through informal teaching and in response to the learning needs of others
- Performs select clinical duties, including but not beyond:
- Taking vital signs
- Oral, IM, and SUBQ medication administration
- Wound care and dressing changes
- Assisting in the completion of patient admissions and discharge work
- Enemas
- Vaccine administration
- Chart review
- Patient education
- Completes other duties as assigned by the nurse.
Qualifications
Education:
- High School graduate or GED equivalent required
- Graduate of an accredited program for Medical Assistants. OR Graduate of a registered apprenticeship program with 2 years of clinical experience OR Graduate of an online program or on the job training program with 3 years of clinical experience.
License(s)/Certificaton(s):
- Current certification as a Certified Medical Assistant
- Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire
