Ventura County Medical Center is a fully-integrated, comprehensive system of hospital, clinic and specialty services. Santa Paula is an acute, 49 bed general community hospital. Both hospitals provide access to health care to all residents of our county, with special emphasis on providing access to care for the underserved and those facing barriers. The Nursing Education department leads, facilitates and coordinates the professional development and administration of courses and programs for the lifelong learning of nurses at all levels. They are there to support the ongoing competency needs of the Nursing Department reflective of evidence-based practice.
Under direction of a Clinical Coordinator, the incumbent will provide direct and indirect patient care in the role of a Vascular Access Nurse or on a specialized unit, as scheduled. They will also serve as an advisor/educator to staff regarding policies and nursing procedures, and to perform related work as required.
WHAT WE OFFER:- Certification Pay: $0.813 per hour based on scheduled work week hours for each qualified certification up to a maximum of five (5) certifications.
- Educational Incentive: Incumbents may be eligible for educational incentive pay in addition to the adjusted base rate of pay in the noted amounts for educational attainments which are not specifically required for the classifications:
- Bachelor's Degree $1.25/hr
- Graduate Degree $1.75/hr
- Bilingual Incentive: Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational need and certification of skill. To qualify for this incentive, incumbents in eligible positions must take and pass the applicable bilingual fluency examination.
- Evening & Night Shift Differential: 7.5.% - 15%
- Weekend Shift Differential: $2.00 per hour.
- Health Care Plan: Per Diem employees may purchase the Ventura County Health Care Plan (VCHCP) at their own expense.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Per Diem Nurse is distinguished from the Registered Nurse classification in that Per Diem Nurses are scheduled to work on an as-needed basis (intermittent) to supplement staffing needs.

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:- As a PICC/Vascular Access nurse, participates in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care and needs of patients and clients who require vascular access in the course of their care; collaborates with physician and case management for prioritization on PICC placements;
- Utilizing nursing process, plans and participates in providing daily patient care;
- Follows prescribed doctors' orders concerning treatments and medications;
- Makes patient observations, records and reports all pertinent information; provides follow-through on judgement;
- Assists doctors in examination and treatment;
- Provides unit organization and is responsible for completion of all delegated and indicated nursing duties by the end of the assigned shift;
- Assists in training, supervision and evaluation of ancillary personnel and in the training of new personnel;
- In Ambulatory Medicine areas, provides physician assistance and patient care as indicated and required; and
- Performs other related duties as required.

Per Diem Registered Nurse III - requires at least five (5) years of professional registered nursing experience. These employees may be appointed to work on specialized short-term projects such as hospital accreditation or on other projects that require specialized administrative duties and responsibilities.NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
- Must possess and maintain a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of California, or licensure in another state with California licensure pending.
- Must possess a current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification by first day of employment and maintain it thereafter.
- Must possess a current, valid Vascular Access Certification (VA-BC) by first day of employment
- Must have a current, valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification by first day of employment.
- Must have a current, valid Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification by first day of employment
- Must successfully complete the Health Care Agency Pharmacology examination within three (3) months of employment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of:
- the theory, techniques, and practices of professional nursing;
- medical terminology and hospital routine and equipment;
- medicines and narcotics.
Working ability to: - plan and organize nursing care;
- train and supervise non-professional staff;
- establish and maintain confidence of patients and staff,
- work effectively in different hospital departments on shifts as required.
