Summary:
Provides evidence-based vascular access care for patients that include Intravenous (IV) Access, Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) line placement & insertion, IV access repair, blood draws and dressing changes. Supports the nursing units, collaborates with the RNs, medical staff, and educates patients and their family members on the procedure in a compassionate patient and family centered care environment.
Responsibilities:
De-clot VAD's or assists staff as a resource in de-clotting.
Conducts prevention rounding and follows up on identified concerns promptly.
Completes the hand off process at shift change, provides patient information, communicates pending IV's, PICC line insertions, and dressing changes.
Communicates patient's progress, critical findings, and changes in the patients' condition w/ the physician or disciplines involved regarding IV therapy complications & procedure.
Assesses all body systems, absence of blood borne infections, surgical site infections & observance of skin integrity for prevention of skin breakdown.
Educates patients & families on Vascular Access procedure, documents the teaching in Electronic Health Record & notifies RN and/or Physician of any patient/family concerns
Provides Vascular Access nursing care including Peripheral Intravenous (IV), Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) line insertion, placement, monitoring & dressing changes.
Troubleshoots difficult complications of VAD's or assists staff in troubleshooting.
Works with staff nurses, physicians, case managers and other team members to insure early assessment for VAD selection and implementation.
Assembles medical equipment and supplies for procedure and restock supplies.
Places difficult peripheral IV's with or without ultrasound as needed.
Performs reassessments as per policy, when there is a change in the plan of care or when an intervention is performed.
Provides staff education on Care and management and Complication management.

Additional Job Information:
Complexity of Work: Requires critical thinking skills, effective communications skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
Required Work Experience: Two (2) years nursing experience in an acute care hospital setting required. Experience inserting PICC lines preferred.
Other Information: Vascular RN Certification preferred.Additional Education Info: BSN preferred.
