Job Responsibilities
- Working in contract role in a local acute facility for a designated time period (usually 10-15 weeks)
- Monitoring patients for changes in status, including signs of bleeding or infection, and responding appropriately
- Monitoring post-operative vital signs, pain levels, and neurological status
- Assessing post-surgical sites for circulation, color, temperature, and movement
- Managing airway and respiratory adequacy as patients emerge from anesthesia, ensuring effective airway support
- Administering medications to manage pain and the post-operative side effects of anesthesia, including setting up PCA pumps and initiating transfusions as per policy
- Documenting all aspects of patient recovery and any issues encountered in the PACU
- Collaborating effectively with surgical, anesthesia, and nursing teams to ensure continuity of care
- Preparing patients for discharge from the PACU or transitioning them to another unit for inpatient care
- Adhering to established nursing protocols and evidence-based practices related to post-anesthesia care
- Providing comprehensive post-operative education and guidance to patients and their families
- Providing compassionate and family-centered care, ensuring a patient-centric approach in the PACU
- Being accountable to follow and adhere to the Patient Care Plan as defined
Qualifications and Skills
- Current North Carolina state Registered Nurse (RN) license (Compact allowed)
- Associate degree or bachelor's degree (preferred) in nursing from an accredited school
- Minimum of eight-months of nursing experience in PACU, ICU, or OR settings
- American Heart Association (AHA) certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) if applicable
- Certification in Post Anesthesia Nursing (CPAN) (preferred)
- Exceptional critical thinking, quick decision-making, and clinical judgment skills
- Excellent communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills to handle sensitive situations and diverse patient populations
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs
