Under the general direction of the Director, the Physician Directors for the TCT and Hematology Programs, and the Cancer Service Line Leadership, the Nurse Manager will be responsible for clinical operations and patient care activities at the University of Chicago Hospitals. The nurse manager oversees day-to-day operations, including programmatic oversight of the following processes: scheduling, planning, organizing, and directing all activities related to patient centered care in the adult Hematology-Oncology ambulatory units, and handles an array of administrative duties, including recruitment and hiring; clinical staff supervision; ensuring appropriate staffing coverage plan, and equitable patient assignments across the programs. Participates in various inspections, including FACT, JCAHO, QOPI and other accreditation and regulatory inspections.
Essential Job Functions
- Staffing and Recruitment
- Participates in the recruitment and selection of nursing staff. Identifies recruitment needs and determines staffing needs in consultation with director and physician directors and assures proper scheduling and utilization of services in maintaining quality patient care.
- Participates in budget development and makes recommendations regarding staffing, equipment, and supply issues.
- Assesses patient acuity and plans appropriate nursing assignments to meet patient needs for outpatient areas.
- Staff Development and Training
- Develops a comprehensive and well-rounded nursing orientation plan in collaboration with oncology clinical nurse educators, clinical nurse specialists, and other nursing leaders
- Assists staff members in identification of learning needs and promotes staff participation in professional and institutional activities, including designing studies or projects and presenting abstracts at national conferences and symposia.
- Participates in and promotes educational opportunities for staff, including hosting in-service classes and Grand Rounds, to improve clinical care.
- Participates as appropriate in educational programs designed to promote professional growth and development, and implementing lessons learned at UCM.
- Ensures that appropriate staff attend mandatory educational programs and in-services per FACT and JCAHO regulations.
- Performance Review and Management
- Evaluates staff performance on a formal and informal basis.
- Completes annual performance evaluations and forwards to appropriate individuals. Provides recommendations for merit increases.
- Recognizes staff for performance, provides constructive criticisms and/or reprimands, commendations, suspensions, discharges, transfers, promotions or demotions.
- Handles difficult situations involving interpersonal relationships between staff and physicians, patients, families of patients, and other employees.
- Establishes priorities and assures implementation of goals and objectives, evaluating performance and reporting significant results
- Clinical Research Support
- Supports the TCT and Hematology Programs research efforts, works with the clinical research team to provide appropriate training to research personnel, assists with site qualification visits and audits as applicable, and serves as subject matter expert during schema review and budget discussions to appropriately assess budget for research-related activities, including determining appropriate coding for procedures to capture revenue
- Provides oversight of CPIT assignments to direct reports, including ensuring that review and completion of CPITs are done in a timely manner
- Strategic Planning
- Participates in periodic review of TCT and Hematology Programs goals and objectives, and provides assistance to the Director, Program Directors, and Cancer Service Line leadership in developing strategic plans to grow the programs.
- Assists with initiatives to improve patient intake and facilitation of timely referrals, including development of action items to address feedback from referring physicians participating in our external advisory board
- Quality and Process Improvement Initiatives
- Participate in program, section and service line meetings to ensure the TCT and Hematology areas are adequately represented.
- Work with Operational Excellence to identify opportunities to improve processes and efficiencies, using LEAN management tools, to drive improvement projects related to the Programs.
- Collaborates with director, medical directors, and other program leaders on development and implementation of quality projects and process improvement initiatives designed to optimize patient outcomes, improve patient satisfaction, and promote operational efficiencies.
- Collaborates with director and program directors in collecting data to support projects and initiatives.
- Performs other duties/special projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Currently licensed as a registered professional nurse in the State of Illinois.
- Two or more years’ experience in Hematology/Oncology.
- Five or more years nursing experience
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
- Demonstrated clinical and/or leadership skills that serve as a role model for subordinates.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Computer proficiency.
- Considerable skill in determining priorities, working independently, and exercising sound judgment.
- High degree of initiative and problem-solving ability.
- Considerable skill in communicating verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure.
- Maturity; ability to exercise judgment and assume responsibility.
- Willingness to learn new systems and processes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Several years in a nursing leadership capacity.
- Ambulatory nursing experience.
- National certification strongly preferred - must obtain a national certification within one year of hire.
- Familiarity with UCH Information Systems (Epic, REDCap, Kronos, Oracle).
