Job Summary and Qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Medical Assistant (MA) is responsible for assisting the staff in the clinic with patient care. S/he helps patients by providing information services and assistance, securing medical records, maintaining medical supply inventory, scheduling, processing physician orders, chart prep, assisting with office correspondence and records/specimen retrieval. Additionally, s/he may participate in obtaining and/or monitoring V/S, drawing blood, reviewing patient history questionnaires, updating Med Action plans, transporting patients and in assisting the professional staff with patient care activities.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES:

1. Possess a general knowledge of the fundamentals of patient care.

2. Maintain a safe, secure and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures as defined by the hospital.

3. Follow relevant SOPs related to the safe handling of patient specimens.

4. Be knowledgeable regarding isolation precautions.

5. Perform phlebotomy based upon having the degree of skill commensurate with the individual’s education, training, or

experience and technical abilities.

6. Perform patient assessments with the assistance of licensed clinic personnel. S/he will verify patient information.

7. Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect a patient/caregiver and reports these to the professional staff.

8. Monitor and document V/S, HT, WT, I/O and medications as appropriate.

9. Secure patient information and maintain patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records: keeping patient

information confidential.

10. Assist in maintenance and ordering of clinic supplies.

11. Adhere to quality initiatives as defined in the Quality Management Plan.

12. Assist with patient transport activities.

13. Assist in training new employees/students as directed.

14. Present a positive, service oriented focus to all customers.

15. Exhibit and adhere to ICARE Standards of Behavior in all areas of job duties and responsibilities.

16. Embrace new technology and programs, participates in hospital initiatives, in achieving laboratory department goals and

meetings, education and in-services.

17. Actively participate in learning/continuing education programs.

18. Participate in regulatory survey/assessment readiness.

19. Maintains confidentiality and HIPPA privacy laws during interactions with provider practices, patients, and caregivers.

20. Performs other related functions as assigned.

EDUCATION REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED:

High school graduate or GED required. Associates preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED OR PREFERRED:

1 year related experience preferred.
Prior experience working within a “Transplant & Cellular Therapy (TCT) / Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) / Blood and Marrow transplant program is highly

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

Demonstrated skills in organization, verbal and written communications, customer service, math, analysis, reading, following instruction, basic computer usage.
Basic understanding of hematologic malignancies and cellular therapies.
Ability to multitask.
Works effectively with the care team and is promotes teamwork.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

Medical Assistant certification required. Phlebotomy Technician certification preferred.
