Summary
The primary function of the surgical technologist is the "scrub technologist" in the surgical suite. The surgical technologist may be assigned other functions as deemed necessary.
Major Job Functions:
The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below, and specific functions may change from time to time.
1. Knows and follows aseptic technique when performing scrub duties and support duties for the department.
2. Performs scrub duties as assigned in service areas.
3. Assists in carrying out the patient's plan of care by performing assigned tasks within scope of practice of the surgical technologists and according to the unit guidelines of care, facility policies and procedures, nursing policies and procedures, and legal limitations.
Functions as a surgical scrub technician in the operating room/procedure room under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
Assists with gowning and gloving other members of the surgical team. Assists with the preparation of the operating room for surgical procedures. Assists with skin preparations and with draping of patients. Knows and practices the principles and procedures of sterile technique. Handles specimens in accordance with facility policy and procedures. Participates in the final “Time Out” process in the OR or procedure room to verify the correct patient, the correct procedure, the correct site and if applicable, the correct side. Cleans and/or disinfects instruments and equipment after use and returns it to the proper area for storage or processing. Participates in sponge, instrument, and needle count with the circulation nurse. Demonstrates ability to understand and use sterilizers, high-level disinfectors, instrument washers, and other designated processors. Assists with stocking, replenishing and preparation of supplies. Helps to ensure that “specialty carts’, equipment, supplies, etc., are cleaned monthly, checked for outdates as needed. Terminally clean OR at the end of the day.
4. Transports and escorts patients to various areas of the hospital and for discharge.
5. Assists in stocking, replenishing and preparation of supplies.
6. Assists with the maintenance, selection and preparation of instruments, equipment and supplies necessary to maintain a state of readiness for operative cases.
7. Fosters guest relations within the team and with patients and families.
8. Maintains confidentiality of all patient information as required by facility policy. .
9. Performs other task and duties as assigned to meet the patient care and/or unit goals.
10. Supports patients in the practice of their cultural and spiritual beliefs within limits of the plan of care.
11. Adjusts patient care based on the age-specific physiological and psychosocial needs of patients.
21. Assists with completing charges for patient services and participates in cost containment.
13. Participates in educational and performance improvement activities. Maintain educational requirements to keep certification status for Certified Surgical Techs.
14. Follows established facility policies and procedures with regard to attendance.
15. Demonstrates to competent usage of proper body mechanics in all activities.
16. Actively participates in cost containment and assists in accurate documentation of implants.
17. Interacts with all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees in a mature, responsible manner to ensure a positive and professional facility environment.
18. Provides a 30-day notice upon resignation.
Qualifications: The following qualifications or equivalents are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of the job.
Education and Formal Training: Requires high school graduate or equivalent and prefer employee who has completed Surgical Technologist Course from an Accredited CAHEA Program. Experience in lieu of formal training will be considered.
Work Experience: Prefer one-year experience as a surgical technologist.
