Occupational Health Nurse - LPN

The Occupational Health nurse assists in developing and administering the Occupational Health Program at Opelousas General Health System. This position participates in the new hire process by performing pre-employment health screenings and immunizations and maintaining appropriate documentation of employee health records. The Occupational Health nurse provides education to staff that helps employees understand their health and safety on the job. This position works closely with the Quality Department to develop protocols for managing employee health, including management of employee injuries and exposures. Responsible for the Employee Health Program and for coordinating all aspects of Employee Health. Responsible for all pre-employment testing and vaccination processes, annual N95/TB/Influenza testing and/or vaccinations, and the management of potential blood exposures and employee illnesses. The Occupational Health nurse will participate in direct patient care through the Medical Home as needed by performing nursing functions and applying professional skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Implements and revises the employee health program which addresses, at a minimum, the following:

a. Delivers nursing care to sick or injured employees.
b. Monitors work related illness/injury trends and develops strategies to prevent/minimize work-acquired injury or illness
c. Works with the infection control preventionist in surveillence of annual influenza activity, COVID 19, and other communicable diseases
d. Coordinates pre-employment health screenings and immunizations with Human Resources
e. Provisions required employee health visits and maintains of documentation of such
f. Manages all employee exposures including assessment, treatment and follow up
g. Manages Employee Health protocols in conjunction with the Infection Preventionist

2. Maintains necessary data tables and spreadsheets to support decision making.

3. Implements relevant policies and procedures for employee health practices.

4. Works with the Infection Preventionist in monitoring work-related exposures.

5. Participates, in accordance with the approved employee health plan, in the quality assurance and performance improvement program

6. Conducts new on-hire health screenings to include immunizations update.

7. Participates in annual Flu Vaccine Program.

8. Plans and implements other vaccine programs as directed by APIC, OSHA, CDC and other regulatory agencies to include Tetanus and MMR.

9. Conducts TB screening for all new employees and all other employees and volunteers according to the hospital's TB control plan.

10. Maintains employee health records.

11. Maintains inventory of medications and supplies related to Employee Health.

12. Maintains summaries and written reports required for employee illness/injury reporting.

13. Documents and maintains date on patient’s record.

14. Maintains a safe environment.

15. Applies basic teaching / learning concepts to patient education.

16. Acts as a patient advocate.

17. Participates in performance improvement.

18. Delegates and / or supervises aspects of care to team members and reviews completion.

19. Performs related work as required.

20. Communicates pertinent data to appropriate parties.

21. Maintains patient confidentiality.

22. Conducts herself/himself effectively in stressful situations.

23. Approaches situations with distressed patients, families, and visitors in a calm, professional manner.

Education: Licensed Practical Nursing degree

License: Must have a current Louisiana LPN License
