Scheduled Work Hours/Shift: tentatively Monday-Friday, 8:00am- 5:00pm (shift and hours may be altered and negotiated to include evenings as per the teams needs since this position would be one of 3 APPs doing inpatient and outpatient work)

Required Minimum Training and Experience Training
Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN as noted below.

o PCPNP/PNP (Primary Care Pediatric NP or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner): Pediatric patients (birth to age 21), stable chronic disease state management or primary care setting.
o FNP (Family NP): (birth to death) Stable chronic disease state management, primary care across the lifespan.
Experience: At least 2 years of pediatric neurosurgical care as an RN or NP/PA-C experience is preferred.

o PACNP (Pediatric Acute Care NP): Pediatric pts (birth to age 21), acutely ill or injured, potentially unstable or technologically dependent.
Degree of Supervision
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant will be working with other midlevel providers, and mid-training (PGY-4 and occasionally 3 Neurosurgery Residents) and will report directly to the attending pediatric neurosurgeons in the team.
Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations
All certifications must be current and complete prior to start date:
Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
If applicable, DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to first day.
Job Duties:
Provides direct care to patients through the following activities:
· Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations
· Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline
· Performs the following therapeutic procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill and proficiency as approved by the Clinical Division Chief
o Neoplasm of the brain and spinal cord and cranial nerves (malignant and benign)
o Craniofacial Pain syndrome including trigeminal neuralgia, occipital neuralgia, and atypical facial pain
o Developmental Anomalies including arachnoid cysts, chiari malformation, miscellaneous
o Hydrocephalus
o Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension
o Closed Head Injury, skull fractures
o Intracerebral and subarachnoid hemorrhage, subdural hematoma, brain aneurysms, TIA
o Arteriovenous malformations, Dural and Intradural
o Cervical, Thoracic and Lumbosacral radiculopathy, myelopathy, sprain/strain, nerve root injury, post-laminectomy syndrome, disc degeneration, herniated intervertebral disc, stenosis, spondylosis, spondylolysis/subluxation/dislocation, acute spinal cord injury, anterior cord syndrome, central cord syndrome, spinal fractures with or without spinal cord injury, congenital abnormalities of the spinal cord and spinal column, spinal cyst/abscess, osteoarthritis, osteomyelitis
o Cerebral palsy and other causes of spasticity
o stupor, coma
o Peripheral nerve and brachial plexus palsies
o Seizure disorders
o Movement disorders
o Post-operative wound infections
o Other co-existing conditions and responses to surgical/medical treatment which necessitate intervention
· Initiates referrals to other health care provides, and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician
· Documents and bills for direct care provided
· Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice
· Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research
· Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization
· Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education
· Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student; and facilitates the learning of other new team members
· APRN or PA must maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law
· Provides direct care to patients through the following activities: Evaluating and managing inpatients on the Pediatric Neurological Surgery Service. Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations, and discharge summaries. Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice protocols and collaborative scope of practice agreement. Performs procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill and proficiency as approved by the appropriate credentialing body.
· Works with peds neurosurgery consultation services to manage, bill and provide procedural services to all patients on that service (PICU, NICU, ED). Will be tasked with doing consultations, reviewing these consultations with the primary pediatric chief resident and the pediatric neurosurgery attending. Manage neurosurgical issues on consultations patients in the pediatric intensive care unit, the neonatal intensive care unit, and any other part of the children’s hospital which has neurosurgery consultation patients. Management of pediatric neurosurgery consultation includes but is not limited to, ordering imaging studies, recommending medical care, discussion with faculty and other services, arranging outpatient needs, responding to neurosurgical issues through pages, performing procedures (ICP monitor trouble shooting and removal, EVD troubleshoot and removal, obtaining CSF from ventricular reservoirs, EVDs, Subdural drains, Lumbar drain trouble shooting and removal, wound management and suturing, assisting in procedures in the ICU and procedure room setting and other relevant procedures which the pediatric neurosurgery faculty deems appropriate under their service).
· Supervise care delivered by nursing and auxiliary health care staff, communicate with family members regarding patient care and concerns and provide administrative support and follow up to ensure patient care is orderly and effective. Provide clinical instruction and oversight to nursing staff and the rotating surgical interns.
· Initiates referrals to other health care provides, and/or consult with the attending physician or the collaborating physician.
· Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization. Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research.
· Follow clinical protocols as necessary.
· Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
· Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice.
· See patient in clinic with and without the attending pediatric neurosurgeon/resident
· Assess and made decisions regarding the follow up care, need for intervention at the time of clinic, and potential for surgical procedures – will communicate with attending pediatric neurosurgeons regarding patients seen if questions arise
· Provide assistance and guidance to other services in the inpatient and outpatient arenas to help with questions and mutual patients
· Staffing of multidisciplinary clinics to provide pediatric neurosurgery expertise and guidance for the management of these mutual patients.
Physical Requirements
Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped. Be able to attend both Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital and Summey Medical Pavilion for duties.
Additional Job Description
Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing and two years clinical experience required, at least one year of which must have been in a specialty area of care. Certification as a Nurse Practitioner specific to the area of employment required unless a new graduate. New graduates must be certification eligible upon employment, and obtain certification within six months of employment. Requires licensure as a Registered Nurse and hold official recognition as a Nurse Practitioner from the South Carolina Board of Nursing. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
